United Sports Club – Shillong Lajong Preview: North eastern side hope for an away win

Singto’s side will look to get back to winning ways in order to close in on the top three…

United SC face Shillong Lajong in an I-League encounter at the Kalyani Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Kolkata outfit have been in decent form lately and would count themselves unlucky for having conceded late against Mumbai FC in a 1-1 draw. They haven’t won in their last seven matches but gave a good account of themselves in the IFA Shield where they finished third at the expense of the star studded East Bengal.

Technical director Subrata Bhattacharya will look for more defensive solidity from his side when they face the Lajong challenge.

Goals have also been a problem for them this term and in the absence of Ranti Martins, the onus is on Adekunle Waheed and Baldeep Singh to up their performance.

“Ranti is a big name and the team will miss him for some time surely. But Waheed also looked good and I hope if given time, he will gel well with the squad,” said Bhattacharya.

Meanwhile Lajong have been out of action for close to a month since their Federation Cup group stage exit where they thrashed Salgaaocar FC and Mumbai FC only to go down 6-0 to Mohun Bagan.

Coach Thangboi Singto will be missing the services of midfielders Taisuke Matsugae and Milan Singh which shall cripple his options in the middle of the park.

The good news is that striker Uilliams who missed the Federation Cup has recuperated well and is now ready to start. They have also made an addition to their squad in the winter transfer window by snapping striker Durga Boro to add more teeth upfront.

“United plays a good brand of football and they have good experienced players. It’s going to be a tough match for us but we have to perform together as a team and one unit to win. We will be missing Taisuke and Milan which is a big setback. But this will provide an opportunity to other players to play and do well,” said Singto.

The last time the two sides met, the result was a 1-1 draw.
