Prayag United 2-0 Shillong Lajong: The hosts secure a comfortable win over the Reds

Eelco Schattorie's side played host to Shillong Lajong and comfortably dispatched them in a 2-0 home win.

Prayag United secured a 2-0 home win over Shillong Lajong in an I-League Round 25 encounter at the Kalyani Stadium.

Ranti Martins converted from the spot in the 20th minute to give the hosts the lead and Shylo Malswamtulunga scored the second goal seven minutes later.

The match got off to an electrifying start as Edinho Junior was gifted an opportunity within seconds from kick-off. A sloppy pass out from the back was intercepted by Boithang Haopkip who played in Edinho. The Blackburn Rovers loanee had plenty of time and space but his lobbed effort over an advancing Subrata Paul sailed over the bar. A golden chance went begging.

In the very next minute, Ranti Martins was nearly through on goal but the defender stretched out a leg and managed to put the ball out for a corner from which a tame header resulted in a goal kick. In the 7th minute, Prayag's high-line was exposed when Edinho beat the offside trap and was clean through on goal. He was one-on-one with the keeper but he took ages to pull the trigger and allowed Deepak Mandal to get back and put in a last ditch tackle. The young striker really should have got his shot away earlier.

Missing glorious opportunities seemed to be a trend in the opening ten minutes and even the prolific Ranti Martins couldn't help but indulge. Kayne Vincent played in the Nigerian who only had the keeper to beat from 10 yards out but under a bit of pressure from a defender, he horribly micued his shot which went well wide.

The hosts enjoyed plenty of time on the ball in the opening period as Lajong were reluctant to close them down which facilitated their passing game. In the 17th minute, Vincent peeled away from his marker and chased down an aerial pass. However, the Australian was clattered into by Ralte who had rushed off his line and conceded a penalty.

Ranti Martins made no mistake from the spot with a precise finish into the top right hand corner to give Prayag the lead. The striker has now failed to score in only 5 of the 25 league games he's played this season.

In the 27th minute, Martins played in Vincent who had made another excellent run in behind the defense. With only the keeper to beat, he unselfishly squared the ball to Shylo Malswamtulunga to finish into an empty net.

A few minutes later, a short corner was played to Lalkamal Bhowmick who crossed into the box where Rafique's glancing header went just wide. In the 36th minute, Martins had only the last defender ahead of him and cut inside to shoot with his left foot but Ralte got down to make the save. Vincent had a go from the rebound but the custodian parried his shot away as well.

Kottayil Asif seemed to have picked up a knock and had to be strechered off. He was replaced by Zakeer Mundampara in the 41st minute. In the last chance of the half, Edinho laid the ball off to Boithang Haokip who unleashed a stinging shot with his left foot which Subrata Paul did well to save.

It took 20 minutes for the second half to produce any chances of note and in the 65th minute, substitute Kamimura found himself in acres of space in the penalty area after bringing down a cross. His shot was well saved by a Subrata Paul who flung himself to his left.

In the 70th minute, spectators were treated to some real quality as Martins wriggled past two defenders in the penalty box before laying the ball off for Rafique who side-footed his effort towards the far corner but Ralte did exceptionally well to tip the ball around the post for a corner. Brilliant play all round and that was probably the best piece of action from the second period.

The visitors finally conjured up another opportunity for themselves in the 78th minute as Kamimura latched on to a ball over the top and used his body to fend off the keeper before turning to get his shot away but Deepak Mandal positioned himself well and cleared off the line.

In the 84th minute, Bello Rasaq did well to bring the ball out of defense and then played a neat pass through for Martins who had plenty of space. The striker crossed for Rasaq who had continued his run but his header went wide of the far post.

The rest of the game fizzled out as the hosts were content with their lead and their possession play kept the ball away from Lajong. The win sees Prayag leapfrog Pune FC into third place while Lajong failed to pick up their first away win of the season.
