The Kolkata outfit begin their league campaign after the winter break against Khalid Jamil’s side on Wednesday…
United SC take on Mumbai FC at the Kalyani Stadium, West Bengal in an I-League encounter.
The two teams are stuck in the bottom half of the table at ninth and tenth spots respectively. United have 18 points to show for their efforts while Mumbai have 16 but have a game in-hand.
Neither of the two teams had a good outing at the Federation Cup. United SC finished third in a group that consisted of winners Churchill Brothers, Pune FC and Eagles FC. On the other hand, Mumbai FC finished rock bottom of their group losing all their matches against Shillong Lajong, Salgaocar FC and Mohun Bagan.
However Mumbai FC have done better in the I-League of late, winning two and drawing three from their last five games.
New manager Ananta Kumar Ghosh and technical director Subrata Bhattacharya’ United will have to pull the team out of the rut they find themselves in. They are facing tremendous financial difficulties which has led to players’ wages being unpaid and the resignation of first team coach Eelco Schattorie.
The new technical director, who is going to be working for free, had positive words for the side and said, “So many players have been making sacrifices during the financial crisis, which is amazing and inspiring. When the officials approached me to guide this team, I was ready to stand by these boys. “
He also said the next stage of the I-league will not be easy, but he has faith in the squad.“I am not saying it would be easy, but this is a good team with some quality with proper planning and careful calculations, results can be achieved. We have to pick up as many wins as possible.”
United SC lost the services of Ranti Martins, who has moved to Rangdajied United FC on loan, and CK Vineeth, who has switched to Bengaluru FC but will be bolstered with the signing of Nigerian striker Adekunle Owolabi Waheed.
Mumbai FC will also look to play their new signings, defender Rahul Bheke and midfielder Sehnaj Singh from Mumbai Tigers in the I-League for the first time.
Henry Ezeh who was signed recently, has been released after his disappointing stint in the Federation Cup. Ebi Sukore had played for Mumbai FC and the midfielder has signed for the club yet again.
Alfred Jaryan had previously plied his trade for Mohammedan Sporting as an attacking midfielder but will be used as a striker alongside Yusif Yakubu.
“United Sports Club are a good team. Despite the loss of Ranti, they are a formidable outfit. We have been training and recovering our injured players since the Federation Cup ended. We hope for a positive result,” said Khali Jamil.
