Khalid Jamil's side nicked a goal in second half injury time to split the points on Wednesday afternoon...
United SC and Mumbai FC played out a 1-1 draw on Wednesday in a round 17 I-League match. Eric Brown had put the home side ahead in the 43rd minute which was cancelled by a late strike by Nicholas Rodrigues in the 91st minute.
Subrata Bhattacharya handed new signing Adekunle Waheed a start alongside the in-form Baldeep Singh. Mumbai FC fielded only three of their four foreign players in the line-up with Ebi Sukore on the bench.
It was the home side who started better and their first chance came in the 13th minute. Brown’s chip inside the box saw Mohamed Rafique head it wide when it would have made sense to leave it for Waheed who was unmarked.
Four minutes later, Dhanachandra Singh linked up with Brown before proceeding to make a darting run through the middle. However he failed to latch on to a pass by the Liberian midfielder and the ball went out of play instead.
The best chance came midway through the first session when K.Asif sent a through-ball for Rafique but the latter could only lob it over the custodian.
The breakthrough finally came two minutes before the end of the first half. Waheed sent in a pass which split the opposition rearguard and Brown did well to dribble past the goalkeeper to slot the ball home.
Khalid Jamil brought in Ebi Sukore in place of Jayesh Rane who couldn’t get into the game for the opening 45 minutes.
Play was restricted to the middle of the park as neither side was able to dictate proceedings as mispasses was the trend of the day.
In the 73rd minute, Mohammed Rafi missed a chance to equalize with an open net in front of him. Nicholas Rodrigues’ corner-kick saw goalkeeper Sangram Mukherjee miss the flight of the ball altogether. The ball came at Rafi’s feet whose effort went over the bar, much to the amazement of his team-mates.
Mukherjee pulled off a top save to deny Sukore five minutes later. He was at it again when he closed down the angle for Rafi with Yusif Yakubu being the provider.
However in the injury time, Yakubu was fouled outside the box and the eventual free-kick by Rodrigues didn’t give Mukherjee any chance whatsoever and restored parity for the away side.
United SC didn’t have a chance to muster another attack and the scoreline remained the same until the final whistle.
