Tottenham - Inter Preview: Harry Redknapp Sweating Over Van Der Vaart’s Fitness While Holders Could Be Without Cambiasso And Julio Cesar

Tottenham

Without Michael Dawson (knee), Ledley King (groin), Vedran Corluka (groin) Jermain Defoe (ankle), and Heurelho Gomes, who is suspended following his red card in the San Siro a fortnight ago, Harry Redknapp now has to face up to the prospect of being without Rafael van der Vaart again, when they take on reigning champions Inter on Tuesday evening.

Their Dutch talisman limped off the Old Trafford pitch on Saturday evening, with what appeared to be a hamstring injury, and Redknapp admitted that the signs are not promising for the former Real Madrid man.

“Van der Vaart is quality, but I think he just got a bit tired and that’s when you get injuries. He hasn’t really had many 90 minutes under his belt," Redknapp said.

“At the World Cup [for the Netherlands], he wasn’t playing 90 minutes and when you get to that last 25 minutes and go a bit further than you normally go, that’s when something can go wrong.”

Possible starting line-up: Cudicini; Hutton, Gallas, Bassong, Assou-Ekotto; Huddlestone, Palacios; Lennon, Modric, Bale; Crouch.

Inter

But to be fair, it’s not all sunny days and bright skies for Rafa Benitez either, with the former Liverpool boss expected to be without two of his star names for Tuesday’s trip to the Lane.

Inter’s Brazilian goalkeeper, Julio Cesar, is also expected to miss the match, along with Argentine Esteban Cambiasso, with the pair both suffering with muscle strains.

A statement on the club’s official website read: “As programmed last night, Esteban Cambiasso and Julio Cesar underwent instrumental controls on Saturday afternoon following their injuries against Genoa.

"The examinations confirmed muscular strains for Cambiasso in his left leg, and a strain for Cesar in his right leg. Both players will follow a physiotherapy programme."

Possible starting line-up: Castellazzi; Maicon, Lucio, Samuel, Chivu; Motta, Zanetti; Eto'o, Sneijder, Pandev; Milito.

Home comforts

It’s safe to say that Tottenham seem more accustomed to Champions League football at White Hart Lane, having shipped just the one goal, against FC Twente, after two matches, compared to the nine conceded on their travels.

Sitting on four points, after two away matches and one at home, Redknapp will feel relatively pleased with his side’s first steps in the competition, but for his side to progress to the knock-out stages, then must take maximum points from the majority of their home fixtures, although the Spurs boss would take a point on Tuesday.

Inter however, will be looking to take another three points off a Spurs side deprived of their star players, and cement their place at the top of the pack.

Goals galore

It goes without saying that Inter’s 4-3 victory over Spurs was one of the most entertaining and action-packed Champions League matches of the season, but the north London side have not been shy to score, or concede, in the competition thus far.

Including the qualification matches against BSC Young Boys, Spurs have scored a total of 15 goals thus far, and conceding 10, making Redknapp’s side the ones to watch for those seeking some European excitement during the midweek.

On group games alone, Tottenham have found the net on nine occasions, more than Real Madrid (5), Barcelona (8), and Chelsea (8).
