Sporting Clube de Goa 5-1 Shillong Lajong FC: Kalu scores a hat-trick in a thumping win for the Goans

SC Goa

Bruzon's side pulled off a five-star performance against their visitors from the north east, courtesy of a hat-trick from Kalu besides strikes from Karpeh and Victorino

Sporting Clube de Goa enjoyed a 5-1 victory against Shillong Lajong FC in a round 15 I-League encounter at the Duler Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Ogba Kalu bagged a hat-trick (26', 59' 67'). Boima Karpeh (65') and Victorino Fernandes (90+3') also struck for the hosts while the away side had initially opened the scoring in the 14th minute through Taisuke Matsugae.

There were two changes to the home team's starting line-up as Pratesh Shirodkar and Mathew Gonsalves were ruled out due to suspension while Jovel Martins and Rowllin Borges made their way in. The visitors had only one change in their first eleven as Jibon Singh was replaced by Minchol Son.

Arturo Garcia laid the ball on a platter for Ogba Kalu Nnana in the eighth minute but the Sporting striker couldn't sort out his feet and his shot went wide.

Six minutes later, a delightful long cross by Boithang Haokip saw Taisuke Matsugae chest down the ball in between rival defenders Gonzalo Neila and Jovel Martins before the Japanese calmly finished past Sporting goalkeeper Ravi Kumar to give the away team the lead.

Gonzalo came close to equalize twice in the following few minutes as Kalu was late to react on one occasion when the Lajong goalkeeper Laltaummawia Ralte failed to cleanly collect the ball.

In the 21st minute, Kalu sent an overhead-kick towards goal but the referee's assistant had his flag raised for a goal-kick before Karpeh had headed Garcia's corner-kick to the Nigerian.

The Flaming Oranje however, found the equaliser as Ralte stood still when Kalu headed in Mauvin Borges' cross from the left in the 26th minute.

It could have been 2-1 in favour of Oscar Bruzon's side before half-time if not for Karpeh's miss just after the half-hour mark. Rojen Singh's cross from the right was flapped by Ralte but only as far as Karpeh. The Liberian-born Australian controlled the same and shot straight in the hands of the Lajong custodian.

Eight minutes into the second half, Karpeh did everything right to ward off Wailadmi Passah and get on the end of Rowllin's pass but his shot went wide of the far post after a couple of clumsy touches on the ball.

In the 59th minute, Kalu pulled off another great finish as he thumped the ball to the left of Ralte from Garcia's low free-kick.

In the 65th minute, Karpeh picked a miss-hit pass by Lallawmzuala from the midfield and had at least five white shirts chasing him down but the Sporting striker found the inside of the right post from the far side.

Kalu completed his hat-trick in the 67th minute as he toed the ball in from a corner taken from the right by Beevan D'Mello who created another chance ten minutes later. Ralte however, made a good save as his timely dive to the left allowed him to block Victorino Fernandes' tap in after the Sporting substitute received a D'Mello's cross from the left.

Victorino eventually got his name on the score sheet after exploiting an open space in the right side of the Lajong box as the Goan striker took his time to cut past the onrushing goalkeeper before slotting the ball home during injury time.

The win for Sporting Clube de Goa sees them go within three points of league leaders Bengaluru FC while Thangboi Singto's side now trail them by four points in third place.
