Villa had three attacks and scored every time. Couldn't have done much with the first two but should probably have done better for Delph's strike.
Like his defensive partner, he struggled. Has been a rock at the back this season, but not tonight. One to forget.
Got forward as often as possible, although he had less success than Clyne, who was on the other flank. Bacuna did well to keep him from causing too much danger.
Got forward down the right at every opportunity, causing Luna plenty of problems all game. Put in a few top crosses, including the delivery for Rodriguez's header. Was forced to come off with an injury.
Was understandably nervous on his return to the team, and it showed. The defence was opened up on just three occasions but they were made to pay for it.
Always wanted the ball, but then too often gave it away, with the ball often running out for a throw-in or goal kick. Replaced at half-time.
Nice and tidy on the ball and kept Southampton's possession ticking over. His final pass was missing, however, which is what his side really needed.
Played with such energy and was all over the pitch causing Villa problem after problem. Brought a good save out of Guzan too.
Tried to impose plenty of energy into his side's play but struggled to get on the ball as much as he would have liked. Taken off in the first half.
Played with similar energy to Lallana as the two took it turns to swap positions. Took his goal very well and could have had another.
Was isolated at times in the first half and his link-up play was not at his best. Brought a top save out of Guzan with a header though.
Made two fine stops to deny Lallana and Lambert and had no chance with Rodriguez's header. Played a big part in the win.
Struggled being put under so much pressure on his return to the Villa team. Barely had time to catch his breath.
Not the rock he has been for the away side in the past, and found it hard dealing with the Saints' energy. Taken off at half-time.
Had a torrid time keeping track of Clyne as the Saints full-back got forward time after time. Was relieved to see him go off.
Considering the amount of attacks he had to deal with the Irishman did well. Put in a couple of fantastic slide tackles to prevent Lallana from breaking free in scoring positions.
A bundle of energy in midfield. Did his best to get the ball back off Southampton when they had it, but with Villa being dominated most of the time, it was hard work for him. Scored a stunning strike to give his team the points.
A very quiet game for the midfielder. Did not see too much of the ball and struggled against the energy of the Saints midfield.
Had his work cut out looking after Shaw but did not let him get in as many crosses as he would have liked.
K. El Ahmadi
A mixed game for the Villa man. Got overrun at times, yet played a big part in his side's second goal, putting in a dangerous delivery for Kozak.
A woeful performance bar the goal. Barely had a touch of the ball all game, but took his goal well. Replaced by Benteke almost immediately afterwards, however.
Was the perfect outlet for Villa, who were limited to playing on the counterattack. His pace was always a problem, which he proved with his excellent goal.
Provided a great assist for Osvaldo's goal but did not exactly add steel to the Saints' defence at the other end.
Not the greatest of impacts from the substitute as he was robbed by El Ahmadi far too easily for Kozak's goal. Not too effective going forward.
He worked hard after coming on and always found himself in the right positions. Took his goal well and could perhaps have had a second.
