The Goan outfit have made a slow start to the season, but will be aiming to get back on track, when they encounter the Reds of Shillong...Oscar Bruzon Barreras’ Sporting revolution seems to have gone awry this season, with them having just one point to show for all their efforts and superiority, especially with their progress in the Goa Pro-League. They are currently tenth in the I-League which doesn’t make for good reading.
Therefore, it is but obvious that the Spaniard will urge his team to stamp their authority over Thangboi Singlo’s team and earn all three points. But that is a task easier said than done, given Lajong’s current excellence.
Barreras has acknowledged the task at hand, yet denies any talk of inability to gather all three points in a feisty encounter. He stressed on the importance of his side walking away with the spoils to finally get their season rolling. Sporting’s coach also admitted that his team line-up will be customized to facilitate the best mix of their strengths coupled with the ability to dent Lajong’s strength.
He also urged his team to take all of their chances so as to not regret it later on as the I-League was a punishing league, while pointing out that his side are currently in a much better position in Goa playing in the same way.
“We have only taken a point from our first two matches, but there was not much discussion after the last game as the players knew where we have to improve and are mature enough to achieve it,” stated Oscar.
Shillong Lajong have in the meanwhile made their best start to an I-League campaign in their fledgling history. They find themselves third in the league with the winds of change pushing them on. Cornell Glen, the summer recruit from Trinidad and Tobago, is the league’s top scorer and will look to add more to his tally of two goals so far.
Yet Thangboi Singto’s side should be wary of a Flaming Oranje side wanting to prove a point. Their exceptional demolition of Dempo wouldn’t have gone unnoticed and the impetus is on them to carry on from where they left off, even though they wavered slightly against a stronger Pune FC.
So, with all to play for, Sporting will look to set their house in order while Shillong will have the top of the table position in their sights. A fiercely contested tie seems a strong possibility. The winner will really take it all from this tie.
