An impressive display by the Shillong side helped them bag all three points from the fixture, despite the unavailability of three of their foreign players...
Shillong Lajong edged past Salgaocar FC 2-1 in an I-League match played in Shillong on Friday. Seikhohao Tuboi and Subash Singh gave the hosts a two goal lead in the first half, while Darryl Duffy pulled one back in the 52nd minute.
Thangboi Singto, the gaffer of the Shillong side could field only one foreigner in his starting line-up as Cornell Glen, Minchol Son and Bomfim Uilliams were out with injuries.
The game started in good pace, with Karma Tsewang creating the first chance of the match, when he ran down the right and took a shot which went well over the target. In the 19th minute, Gilbert Oliviera tried to find Matthew Foschini in the box, who was left unmarked in the box, but the ball was too far away for the Australian to take control.
The first blood, however was drawn by the hosts against the run of play in the 22nd minute. Seikhohao Tuboi was left unmarked in the Salgaocar box and the striker kept his cool to slot the ball home.
In the 30th minute, a defensive error from Lajong had almost set Duffy but Ralte showed his prudence and came off his line to clear the ball making up for the error of Wailadmi Passah. Derrick Pereira used his first substitution in the 37th minute, when he brought in Milagres Gonsalves with Cifton Dias making way for him.
However, the hosts doubled their lead soon, when Tuboi found Subash Singh rushing towards the Salgaocar box. He ran past two Salgaocar defenders and slotted the ball past an advancing Karanjit Singh, who had come out to save his citadel.
Salgaocar had a chance at the other end of the pitch, but Ralte pulled off two back-to-back saves to deny the visitors.
The hosts went into the break enjoying a two-goal lead.
After the break, Salgaocar pulled one back quickly as Duffy was once again at the thick of the things. The Scottish forward was left unmarked in the box and he headed home an aerial ball from the goalmouth to place it to the left of Ralte who had little to do.
Salgaocar went for all-out attack to restore parity in the game, but failed to make out anything from their moves, especially in front of an alert Lajong defense. However, another lapse of concentration by Lajong defense had almost handed Salgaocar a goal scoring opportunity, when Duffy set Karma up inside the box, but the Salgaocar player scuffed his shot wide.
A number of half-chances were created in the final minutes, with Lajong resorting to swift counter-attacks but no more goals were scored.
