In a clash between the two sides that sit top of the table after round 1, Shillong Lajong host Pune FC in an I-League game at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong.
The hosts head into the game having ended their Goan voodoo by getting the better of Dempo SC in their own backyard, with a comprehensive 3-0 win. The Red Lizards themselves had a great start to the season, beating Mohd. Sporting in Kolkata.
Pune FC infact, are on a six match winning streak, going back to last season, when they won five games in a row.
Mike Snoei though, is not getting carried away, and stated,“We are happy with the win. But it's just the start of the season and we have a long way to go.”
They will however, be without striker Raul Fabiani, who got a red card after scoring twice against Mohd. Sporting, meaning a minor re-shuffle might take place, with Douhou Pierre expected to regain his place in the starting line-up.
It is their defense though, which could be put to a much harder test than they got against Cornell Glen, who shone against Dempo SC, with Uilliams Bomfin Silva upfront alongside him.
Pune FC would also have to contend with the home support Lajong shall have, and Thangboi Singto thinks they would play a vital part. He opined, “We are really hungry to play in front of our beloved Lajong Faithfuls and we promise we will give them a great football match.”
The Red Lizards defender Gurjinder Kumar too, looked forward to playing infront of the Lajong fans. He told Goal, “We have been training in Shillong after the Mohammedan Sporting game. We are high on confidence after the last win, and it will be a great feeling to play infront of huge crowds. We will try our best to come away with all three points.”
The 15.30 kickoff on Sunday could also see Pune FC defender Zohmingliana Ralte and SLFC striker Subash Singh come face-to-face against their former employers.
While the Red Lizards registered their first ever win against Lajong in the corresponding fixture last season, historically the hosts have held an advantage in the tie, having won thrice in all competitions, with Pune FC only having won once.
It remains to be seen if they can improve on their record on Sunday or will Singto’s side retain their lead at the top by getting the better of the Pune based side.
