Shillong Lajong moved to contain Mike Snoei's side for long periods in the game as the two teams had to settle for a point each.
Pune FC started on the front foot. First, Douhou Pierre nearly put Arata Izumi through on goal in the 2nd minute before teeing up James Meyer a minute later but the striker could not get his effort on target.
Cornell Glenn led Shillong Lajong's first foray into the opposition's final third in the 8th minute but could only shoot wide. The Trinidad and Tobago man was easily the home side's biggest threat and they regularly tried to feed balls in behind the Pune defense for the striker.
An Uilliams Bomfin free-kick in the 19th minute produced a brilliant save from Amrnder Singh in the Pune goal before Meyers tried his luck at the other end with a 40-yard attempt that fizzed wide.
With 5 minutes of the first half remaining, Uilliams forced Pune's custodian into another save from a free-kick although it was rather more comfortable this time around. That effort was followed up by a Robin Gurung chip that went just over from the resulting corner.
In first half stoppage time, Nikhil Kadam had a great chance to put the visitors into the lead but he skewed his effort wide from a Velington Rocha cross who was free on the right flank. That was the last piece of action from the first half as the teams went into the break 0-0.
At the start of the second half, Pune were once again on the offensive. Gurjinder Kumar played in Douhou with a lobbed pass into the Shillong penalty area but the striker failed to get the ball under his control and a promising attack fizzled out.
The visitors continued to enjoy the lion share of possession but despite passing it around well, Lajong stayed alert and did well to guard against any danger by denying them the opportunity to play a penetrative forward pass.
In the 83rd minute, Pune's constant probing nearly created an opening. Douhou's diagonal ball almost found Kadam inside the box. Four minutes later, a dangerous cross from the left wing was narrowly missed by Taisuke Matsugane whose diving attempt could have won it for the home side.
In injury time, Haokip managed to get a header on goal from Douhou's free-kick but His header lacked power and was comfortably collected by Vinay Singh in the Shillong goal. The final whistle blew and a game of few clear-cut chances ended in a 0-0 draw.
