Shillong Lajong - Mumbai FC Preview: Can the Reds achieve victory in their fight against relegation?

Shillong Lajong FC

The North-East India side have to win at all costs if they are to entertain any hopes of seeing the I-League banner in their stadium next season....

If there ever was a time to pray, now would be the time to do so for Shillong Lajong fans. The Reds are in the relegation zone and with Air India being banned next season, they would have to win at all costs to ensure that they can compete in the I-League next year.

The North-Eastern side have been bolstered by the arrival of Edinho from Blackburn Rovers and the young Portuguese has settled into life in India well with 2 goals in 3 games for the club. They will be up against a Mumbai FC side who are anything but an easy opponent.

Lajong could not manage to garner a win against ONGC FC in their last I-League outing and with the last of their fixtures being against Prayag United and East Bengal, Lajong's chances look really slim. But they will have to go about their job and earn three points and hope that other sides in the league slip up to help their cause.

Khalid Jamil will be an aggrieved man as he saw his Mumbai FC side throw away a point when they conceded a last minute equaliser against Mohun Bagan in the last round of the I-League. The Mumbaikars took the fight to the Mariners and would be in a similar mood when they take on Shillong Lajong FC at the Nehru Stadium in the north-eastern city.

Under no threat of being relegated, Mumbai FC will look to match or better their table positions of previous years. However, they will have to be wary of a Lajong side who have everything to lose and will be looking for a win to save their season.

Shillong Lajong: Thangboi Singto will have no injury or suspension worries as he has a full squad to choose from.

Mumbai FC: Khalid Jamil can welcome back centre-half Justine Stephen who was suspended for the Mohun Bagan game. The rest of the team is expected to bear a similar look to the one that took to the field in Kolkata.

  • Shillong Lajong are one of three other sides who have scored less than 25 goals this season.
  • In their last five matches, Mumbai FC have shared the points on one occasion with Shillong Lajong and have won the remaining four.
  • If Mumbai FC concede another goal, they will equal Lajong's defensive record in the I-League this year.
