The Nigerian talisman’s presence will be a big boost for the Mariners as they face the Lajong challenge…
Shillong Lajong and Mohun Bagan have started on a winning note in group C of the Federation Cup and shall go head-to-head on Saturday at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Kochi.
The north eastern side scored four goals past Salgaocar FC where striker Cornell Glen excelled alongside Seikhohao Tuboi and Subash Singh in attack. The trio possess good speed to hit teams on quick counterattacks and thereby making the most of the large field at Kochi.
“Winning will give us better chances for the semi-finals. We are expecting a good and competitive match,” said coach Thangboi Singto.
The north eastern side’s gaffer acknowledged that the opposition had a good balance of foreign and Indian players
“Mohun Bagan have good foreigners and Indian players as well. They also have a very highly respected coach and we need to do well in all aspects to stand a chance to win against them,” Singto observed.
On the other hand, Mohun Bagan just about edged past Mumbai FC 1-0 in their opening game. While they did create quite a few chances, Christopher Chizoba and Ram Mallik failed to dispatch them with coach Karim Bencherifa defending the former stating that he hadn’t played much since the third week of December.
Katsumi Yusa seems to have returned to the form which enticed Bagan to snap him from ONGC as the goal in the derby against East Bengal has certainly boosted his confidence. His performance against Mumbai FC was one of the best and if he is on song, Lajong would be in trouble.
The good news for the Kolkata outfit is that striker Odafa Okolie is set to start along with midfielder Denson Devadas, who was away on duty for his ‘office’ team.
“Odafa is fit to start. He could have played the last game too but we didn’t want to risk him,” said coach Bencherifa.
Both sides will have to battle it out and go for a win to strengthen their case in order to progress into the final four.
