The north east brigade have won their first game at home last week and will hope for a positive result against the Kolkata giants...In a midweek fixture of the I-League, Shillong Lajong is all set to host Mohun Bagan at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The hosts notched up their first home victory of the campaign in a weekend clash against Mohammedan Sporting and will try to take their four-match unbeaten streak forward. However, they will be locking horns with an inspired Mohun Bagan side, who have garnered 7 points from their last 3 fixtures.
The home side will be hoping to build on their stellar performance against the Black and Whites as their Bomfim Uilliams has been too hot to handle for the opponents in the recent weeks. Cornell Glen is also expected to be back after an injury break and the two strikers who have 8 goals between them in as many games can threaten the opposition's rearguard.
Thangboi Singto, the coach of the Shillong side will be facing a couple of injury owes as Taisuke Matsugae and Cornell Glen are doubtful for the clash and the final decision about them will be taken on the matchday.
In the pre-match press conference, Singto stressed that the encounter against Mohun Bagan is expected to be tough one. “It was a great win, 3 points and chapter closed. It will be difficult against Mohun Bagan and we will try to get a good result,” he told the media.
On the other hand, Karim Bencherifa has injury concerns as Eric Muranda hasn't traveled with the side given that he is still recovering from a fresh injury. Odafa Okolie continues to be absent and that may well mean that Yusa Katsumi and CS Sabeeth will have to bear the responsibility of scoring. No wonder the club has only scored five goals, which is the second worst in the league, in their seven matches this season.
Pritam Kotal and Shouvik Ghosh, who have recently joined the Mariners, have performed well in defense and are expected to retain their places in the starting eleven as the Green and Maroon have been able to clinch two valuable clean-sheets in the last two matches. Shaiju Mon may also get his share of action for the Kolkata giants.
The Mohun Bagan gaffer, however, stressed that he is handling a new unit and of late they are on the right path. "Mohun Bagan is a new team with new players and combination takes time. The schedule was also not easy but we are settling, seven points out of nine in three games,” he told the media on the eve of the match.
Shillong Lajong now have twelve points in their kitty from 8 matches while Mohun Bagan are three points behind having played a match less.
