Thangboi Singto’s side extended their unbeaten run at home to seven games…
Shillong Lajong downed Dempo SC 2-1 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Saturday in a round 16 I-League encounter. Milan Singh scored from the spot before Jeje Lalpekhlua pulled one back in the 56th minute. Boithang Haokip scored the winner at the hour mark and sealed the three points for the hosts.
Cornell Glen was suspended for the tie having picked four yellow cards with C Lallawmzuala included in place of the Trinidad and Tobago striker for Lajong.
Dempo assistant coach Mauricio Afonso, who is in charge of the Goan side in the absence of head coach Arthur Papas, made one change to his starting line-up as Peter Carvalho was preferred ahead of Jewel Raja.
It was cagey start to the game with neither side willing to commit men forward. The first real chance came in the 22nd minute when a corner-kick from Subhash Singh saw Taisuke Matsugae’s header go over the bar.
Dempo had one chance in the first half when Alwyn George beat Lajong defenders but a slight collision with an advancing Lalthuammawia Ralte took the ball out of his control and subsequently out of play.
A lobbed ball into the box saw Milan Singh jostle with two Dempo defenders with one of them being guilty of a handball which left referee with no option but to point to the spot. Milan coolly dispatched into the far right corner with goalkeeper Laxmikant Kattimani diving to the other side.
The home side started the second half on an attacking note creating a couple of half chances but lost the plot inside the box. It was the visitors who scored almost against the run of play.
Jeje Lalpekhlua was spotted inside the box and the Mizoram striker guided the ball past Ralte to restore parity for the Goan side in the 56th minute.
The Reds however were in no mood to relent and shot back almost immediately through a brilliant goal from Boithang Haokip. A 60th minute foul on Lalchhuanwawia Fanai handed over a free-kick to Lajong and Haokip curled his effort in from 15 yards from the left flank to make it 2-1.
Dempo failed to threaten the Lajong rearguard thereafter and Singto’s side saw off the game to register three points. The Golden Eagles were subject to their fifth loss this season as they lie ninth on the table.
