Shillong Lajong's poor home form was extended as Churchill Brothers managed to grab an equalizer right at the death.
A late goal at the death by Hugo Machado earned a point for Churchill Brothers as they held Shillong Lajong to a 2-2 draw at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Shillong on Monday in a round seven I-League match.
The defending champions took an early lead through Bineesh Balan (6’) but conceded twice with goals from Milan Singh (21’ pen) and Ulliams (34’). However there was a sting left in the tail when Machado scored from a free-kick in the 90th minute to level it up.
Singam Subhash Singh started in place of Cornell Glen for Lajong, while Bineesh Balan and Alesh Sawant replaced Satish Singh and Anthony Pereira in the Red Machines' starting line-up.
Balan put Churchill Brothers in the lead early on in proceedings after he tapped in from inside the box following a Balwant singh cross.
Singto's side, after suffering the early set-back, started attacking in numbers but were equally well dealt with by the visitors until the 21st minute which is when they conceded a penalty. Milan Singh stepped up and converted from the spot to score the equaliser.
Although Churchill held on to the possession, Uilliams Bomfin exploited an open space inside the box and put the home crowd into ruptures after his shot took a deflection and en route to goal.
The Brazilian, who gave Lajong the lead, was denied minutes later by a good save from Churchill custodian Arindam Bhattacharya as the two teams entered the lemon break on level terms.
Just after the hour mark, Machado fired a volley from 20 yards which saw a top notch save by Vinay Singh deny the Portuguese.
Machado was in the thick of the action again in the 76th minute as he found Bineesh Balan who sent the ball straight into the goalkeeper’s hands.
Robin Gurung and Seikhohao Tuboi then combined on the right flank and found Boithang Haokip who lost possession inside the box thanks to an alert Churchill defense.
The equalizer came in the 90th minute as Machado found the back of the net from a peach of a free-kick taken from outside the box after the Churchill midfielder was fouled by Wailadmi Passah.
