The north eastern side bagged full points from the fixture as the away side were reduced to nine-men...Shillong Lajong FC defeated Bengaluru FC 3-0 in an I-League encounter played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Shillong on Sunday evening. Uilliams Bomfin (46’) opened the scoring for the hosts while a couple of goals from Cornell Glen (80’, 90'+4) put the game to bed.
Thangboi Singto made a couple of changes to his line-up that lost 2-1 against East Bengal as Cornell Glen returned to the starting line-up along with Wailadmi Passah as Jeevan Singh and Seikhohao Tuboi were left out.
On the other hand, Ashley Westwood also made a couple of changes to his side that won 3-1 against United Sports in the last match as Vishal Kumar and Beikhokhei Beingaichho walked into the starting eleven with Keegan Pereira and Robin Singh making ways for them. Rino Anto was shifted to an unorthodox left-back position while Vishal Kumar started as the right-back.
It was a slow start to the game as neither side managed to dominate the proceedings. However, it was Lajong who got the first clear chance of the match in the 17th minute, after Glen’s powerful left-footer was saved by Pawan Kumar and the ball fell to Boithang Haokip in the box. The Lajong midfielder attempted a shot, but the ball was cleared from the goal-mouth by a Bengaluru defender.
The Blues had their first opportunity only in the 42nd minute, when John Menyongar pulled the trigger from distance after a good build-up from the midfield. However, the Liberian found himself unlucky as his shot rattled the horizontal.
Bengaluru created another good move at the stroke of the half-time after Anto went on a marauding run down the left and sent a brilliant cross for Rooney, who was standing just outside the box. The Australian striker couldn’t time his shot well and the ball went over the bar.
After the break, Lajong showed renewed vigour and they were rewarded for their efforts in the 46th minute. Son had spotted Glen on the right and the former Jamaican international controlled the ball and fed Uilliams Bomfim inside the box. The Brazilian striker had to negotiate an uneven bounce but managed it well and to slot it into the net to draw first blood.
Glen showed glimpses of his class again in the 66th minute, when despite being heavily marked, he forged into the opponent box and saw his left footed effort go just wide.
Uilliams breezed into the box to create another chance in the 77th minute, and crossed it for Tuboi, who had the entire breadth of the goal at his mercy. However, the substitute couldn’t make a perfect contact and Pawan Kumar pulled off a good save to deny the hosts their second goal.
However, Lajong doubled their lead in the 80th minute after Glen went past a couple of defenders to calmly place the ball inside the box.
The away side was reduced to ten men as custodian Pawan Kumar was given marching orders for handling the ball outside the penalty-box, heaping more misery on them.
The nightmare was still not over for Ashley Westwood’s side as Curtis Osano was also red-carded in the injury time after an ill-timed tackle on Tuboi. Glen stepped up and converted it from the spot with ease to script an emphatic victory at home.
