The north east unit got back to winning ways against Pailan Arrows after failing to win their last three league outings...
Sushil Singh scored a goal in each half while Friday Gbeneme added his name of the scoresheet for Shillong Lajong as they cruised past Pailan Arrows at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Shillong in a round eight I-League encounter. Tirthankar Sarkar did pull one back for the away side to make it 3-1 at the final whistle.
Desmond Bulpin made two changes to his side that started in the last game against Churchill as veteran Renedy Singh and Jacob Lalrawngbawla made their way in with Ebi Sukore, who was injured, and Lalramluaha Hmar being let out.
Ravi Kumar started between the sticks for Pailan Arrows in place of Soram Angamba as the latter was injured while Dhanpal Ganeshan was included in place of Tirthankar Sarkar in the starting eleven.
It didn’t take long for the home side to surge ahead in the game as Sushil Singh, who has been accused of being profligate in the past, put his head to good use and find the back of the net from a Jibon Singh cross from the left.
Lajong dominated the proceedings and never let the opposition settle into the game as 17-year old Jacob Lalrawnbawla saw his volley scorch past goalkeeper Ravi Kumar but came off the crossbar in the 19th minute.
Sushil had another opportunity to double the lead in the 40th minute but the striker couldn’t control the ball well after the move was initiated by Renedy Singh and Friday Gbeneme.
Just four minutes after the restart, Sushil Singh made amends for his earlier miss by scoring his second, courtesy of a peach of a volley which didn’t give the Lajong custodian any chance whatsoever.
In the 52nd minute, Renedy Singh gave an assist as Gbeneme got on the scoresheet as well to make the day worse for Papas’ boys.
It was substitute Tirthankar Sarkar who scored for Pailan after the hour mark as he made the most out of the misunderstanding in the Lajong defence.
Papas made a couple of changes, bringing on Vishal Kumar for Pritam Kotal and Shaiju Mon for Prabir das. However, the scoreline remained unchanged to ensure the Reds of all three points and a positive result for Bulpin against his former side.
