The Goan outfit will look to amends following their thrashing at the hands of the north eastern side at the Federation Cup…
Salgaocar FC lost 4-0 to Shillong Lajong at the Federation Cup last month and coach Derrick Pereira will hope that his side avenge their thrashing when the two sides meet in an I-League fixture at the Tilak Maidan, Goa on Friday evening.
The two teams are tied on 24 points each from 16 matches but Lajong are ahead on the table having beaten the Greens 2-1 in an earlier I-League match.
The Goan side have hit form since the resumption of the I-League with two identical 1-0 victories over Mohun Bagan (home) and Mohammedan Sporting (away) with goals from new recruit Dudu Omagbemi.
The Nigerian’s work rate has been exceptional though according to his coach, he can still improve in the next few matches.
However it’s Salgaocar’s defense that has been at its absolute best having managed two back-to-back cleansheets. It will certainly aid Lajong’s chances to know that Clifton Dias has been ruled out of the tie due to an injury.
“We have lost against Shillong Lajong in the away match and the Federation Cup but that is past. Federation Cup is a different ball game, now that we are playing the I-League we need to remain focussed and positive,” said Pereira.
Lajong are coming into the game on the back of a 2-2 draw against United Sports Club in Kolkata. The north eastern brigade will look to rely on the likes of Cornell Glen, Uilliams Silva and Durga Boro for goals.
There is some good news for Lajong fans as Taisuke Matsugae is available for selection after serving his one game suspension.
He (Dudu) is the man who will make the difference in tomorrow’s game as he can tear apart any defence if provided space and we have to keep a close watch on him. They also have the home advantage but we are well prepared for the challenge and are looking for close fight and hopefully a win,” Singto said.
All the roads will lead to Tilak Maidan on Friday evening for this exciting encounter.
