Salgaocar overcame Lajong at home with the help of a double strike from their top scorer, Darryl Duffy.Salgaocar FC cruised to a 3-1 win over Shillong Lajong in an I-League encounter at the Tilak Maidan stadium on Friday evening. A brace from Darryl Duffy (11', 33') gave the hosts a two-goal lead before Boithang Haokip pulled one back (45+1'). Dudu Omagbemi's second half strike then sealed the points for Salgaocar.
With Clifton Dias ruled out due to injury, Brian Mascarenhas started for Salgaocar FC, while the visitors also had one change in their first eleven as Lalramluaha Hmar replaced Seikhohao Tuboi.
A slow build up to the game in the midfield was followed by Salgaocar taking the lead in unfamiliar fashion. Nicolau Colaco's cross to Francis Fernandes saw the rival goalkeeper make a mess of it, leaving Darryl Duffy with the easy task of placing the ball into the back of the net in the 11th minute.
Soon after, Cornell Glen was en route to the Salgaocar goal after being found by Robin Gurung but Nicolau did well to track him and allow the rest of the defense to get back and cover the danger.
Boithang Haokip's corner in the 17th minute was almost averted but for Salgaocar defender Augustin Fernandes' attempt to clear the ball that saw the it come off the bar while Karanjit got a vital touch in the process.
Duffy then went on to bag his second of the game with a powerful right-footed strike after receiving a pass from Dudu Omagbemi in the 33rd minute.
Two minutes later, Dudu's cross to Duffy was overhit while the Nigerian headed a Matthew Foschini free-kick on target but straight to Vinay Singh in the 42nd minute. Lajong then pulled one back as Haokip curled his free-kick into the left corner of the Salgaocar goal in the added time of the first half.
Shillong started the second half brightly as they pushed Salgaocar onto the back foot. However, it was the hosts who crafted the first clear-cut chance of the second period as Dudu turned and unleashed a shot in the 56th minute but the substitute goalkeeper Ralte managed to collect the ball.
Salgaocar went on to restore their two goal lead soon after as Dudu pounced on the loose ball to volley home the third for Salgaocar in the 59th minute following Francis' cross into the box from the right flank.
Shillong looked for an immediate response in order to get back into the game but Karanjit was up to the task as he denied Glen.
The goal keepers at both ends were called into action in the 71st minute as Ralte kept out Dudu and Karanjit followed suit, thwarting Boro. Shillong struggled to create chances in the final quarter of the match as Salgaocar comfortably held to their lead.
Duffy almost headed in the fourth for Salgaocar in injury time, only to be denied by a goal line clearance from Matsugane. In the end, the win saw Salgaocar leapfrog Shillong to go into fourth place while the latter dropped down into fifth.
