David Booth's side registered their first back-to-back I-League wins this season after doing so in the Federation Cup...Salgaocar FC displaced Shillong Lajong FC from the 10th spot on the I-League table after beating the Reds 2-0 in a round 20 match played at the Duler stadium, Mapusa, on Saturday.
First half goals by Josimar da Silva Martins (20') and Randeep Singh (39') leapfrogged the Goans to move up ninth, although 10th-placed Pailan Arrows play on Sunday while Lajong are currently 11th.
David Booth had to replace injured goalkeeper Karanjit Singh with Vinay Singh while Dinesh Singh filled in for Luciano Sobrosa at the back as the skipper's hamstring injury reoccurred.
Lajong FC interim coach Thangboi Singto also made a change in the custodian as he preferred Basant Singh over Lalthuammawia Ralte besides playing Eugeneson Lyngdoh, who returned from suspension, in place of Lalramluaha Hmar in the midfield.
The opening exchanges saw the two teams take their time to settle in with a couple of tackles flying in and the resultant free-kicks being wasted.
In the 15th minute, Lajong keeper Basant Singh gave the possession straight to Gabriel Obatola, but the Salgaocar striker's shot was quickly blocked by defender Walaidmi Passah.
Five minutes later, the home side broke the shackles as John Wilkinson's cross was headed in neatly by Josimar da Silva Martins who did well to shrug off the challenge of Minchol Son in the six yards box.
It was a beautifully crafted pass by Samuel Shadap from around the right side after seeing the run of Taisuke Matsugae and Sho Kamimura, but Salgaocar keeper Vinay Singh charged in front of the duo to clear the ball in the 25th minute.
In another chance that fell to the visitors in the 33rd minute, Boithang Haokip's pass to Sho Kamimura saw the latter try to chip the ball over Vinay Singh who was slightly off his line, but the Salgaocar custodian had ample time to track back and avert the danger.
In the 35th minute from a Eugeneson Lyndoh's free-kick, Sushil Singh's header came off the goalkeeper and the rebound fell for Sho Kamimura who headed it wide.
Randeep Singh's free-kick from 25-yards then took a dip in the net of Basant Singh who completely missed the flight of the ball as the Goans doubled their lead in the 39th minute.
The next real chance of the game came 13 minutes into the second half, when Vinay Singh was caught in two minds with Kamimura charging as he decided to chest the ball and clear it away instead of opting to catch it as he felt that he has crossed the line.
After the hour mark Rocus Lamare headed straight to Lajong keeper Basant Singh off an Obatola cross before Josimar's attempt flew wide in the 62nd minute.
Ten minutes later, after Lajong keeper Basant Singh cleared the ball from the feet of Josimar and the ball fell for Salgaocar substitutite Brian Mascarenhas until the away side's defense scrambled it clear.
Josimar had squared a pass to Milagres Gonsalves but the latter couldn't beat last man Basant Singh and instead got booked for simulation in the 90th minute.
With this win, Salgoacar FC go into the break on a happy note while Lajong have problems aplenty to ponder.
