Salgaocar FC 0-2 Pune FC: Super-sub Paite sinks the Goans as the Red Lizards return to winning ways

Two second half goals helped Derrick Pereira's side notch a victory against the hapless Goan side...

Derrick Pereira plotted a 2-0 victory over his former side Salgaocar FC as Pune FC climbed to fourth spot in the I-League table after ten rounds of matches. Khanthang Paite was the hero for the Red Lizards as he scored twice in the second half.

With Australian striker Sean Rooney being released from the squad, David Booth started with Dada Nabeel in the attack alongside Milagres Gonsalves while opting for Luciano Sobrosa and Augustin Fernandes as the two central defenders.

Derrick Pereira made three changes to the team that started against Mohun Bagan as he brought in Caitano Costa, Othallo Tabia and Daisuke Nishiguchi in place of Chika Wali, Srikanth Ramu and Khangthang Paite.

Pune FC had the first chance to take the lead in the seventh minute when James Moga's header off an Othallo Tabia cross from the left was slightly out of reach for the Salgaocar keeper Karanjit Singh who was relieved to see the ball trickle wide.

After almost 20 minutes, Brian Mascarenhas' free-kick to the far side was held on to well by a diving Abhra Mondal as the Pune FC keeper fell hard on his left side.

The 35th minute then saw Moga's cross being missed by both Daisuke Nishiguchi and Subhash Singh. At the other end, Dada Nabeel headed Milagres Gonsalves' cross straight to Pune FC keeper Abhra Mondal before the two sides headed into the tunnel.

Changing over, Milagres should have done better after being nicely set-up by Brian Mascarenhas just outside the Pune FC box, but the striker sliced his shot wide in the 52nd minute, much to the disappointment of David Booth.

In the 64th minute, Moga's cross was slipped in by a cheeky flick by Pune FC substitute Khanthang Paite who took just 12 minutes to score after coming on in place of Subhash Singh.

Jeje Lalpekhlua, who came in place of Daisuke Nishiguchi, saw his shot saved by Salgaocar keeper Karanjit Singh after the PFC striker was fed in by a Karma Tsewang cross from the left in the 76th minute.

In a move initiated by Douhou Pierre, Karma Tsewang's cross found Paite in the box who nodded in his second of the evening to double the lead for the away side in the 78th minute.

It's could have been 3-0 for the Red Lizards in the 80th minute, but Moga blasted his right-footer wide from inside the Salgaocar box after being set-up by Pierre.

With this defeat, Salgaocar continue to be rooted at the bottom of the table alongside ONGC FC.
