A solitary goal was the difference between the two sides as Bagan bowed down to Salgaocar for the first time this season...
Derrick Pereira made three changes to his first eleven from the one that drew 1-1 against Mohun Bagan in the group stage of the Federation Cup while handing his new signing Dudu a start.
On the other end, compared to the side that lost 1-2 to Churchill Brothers in the semi-final of the Federation Cup, Karim Bencherifa also made three changes with Kingshuk Debnath, Zakeer Mundampara and Sabeeth Sathyan replacing Shouvik Ghosh, Ram Malik and Odafa Okolie. Bikramjit Singh, a winter signing by the Mairners featured on the bench as well.
The first chance of the match came to Daryll Duffy in the third minute, when he got the ball on rebound inside the Mohun Bagan box, but Shilton Paul was alert enough to parry away the Scottish striker's effort.
Duffy was once again in the thick of things a few minutes after Mathew Foschini worked his way into the Bagan box and fed him with a quality ball, but the striker's shot was off target.
Bagan had their first clear-cut opportunity in the 21st minute when Sabeeth found himself in the Salgaocar box, but took too much time before a meek effort was easily blocked by the Salgaocar defense.
The Mariners had another chance in the dying minutes of the first half, when Aiborlang Khongjee pulled the trigger from distance, but the opponent custodian punched it away for a corner.
After the breather, it was Dudu who broke the deadlock for Salgaocar, as his calm finish gave Shilton Paul little chance to stop after the Nigerian was found perfectly by Gilbert Oliviera.
It was Dudu again who almost got his second but his powerful effort from inside the Bagan box was blocked prudently by Denson Devadas.
Mohun Bagan tried to go all guns blazing in the last fifteen minutes and introduced Bikramjit Singh in place of Sabeeth, However the lack of a creative midfielder in the middle of the park once again came to the fore as the team failed to find that final ball in spite of seeing more of the ball.
With this win, Salgaocar now have 21 points from their 15 matches, while Mohun Bagan have 18 points in their kitty, having played one more than the Goan outfit.
