Salgaocar FC - Dempo SC Preview: Goan derby to add spice to midweek fixtures

Salgaocar will look to consolidate their position while Dempo find their tempo flattened largely due to poor performances...

An enticing tie awaits us at the Duler stadium in Goa. Salgaocar FC, currently sitting pretty in second place, having played a game less than the trailing pack will go up against local rivals Dempo SC, whose position reveals their flagging form.

Dempo go into the match with recent history on their side. They have won four of their last five matches against Salgaocar and will look to add a fifth win to that record but it looks a fair way away considering their stuttering start to this season.

Having won no matches in their exploits so far, they find themselves in eighth place with two points, worsened only by Churchill Brothers, Mohameddan Sporting and East Bengal, who are yet to play a game though.

Last time around against Rangdajied United, Dempo took the lead through two well taken goals and then faded away in the latter stages of the second half to leak in two to draw a match they were comfortably in control of. Arthur Papas might well have been in a raging temper, considering the shallow opinion he had of his team’s form and style of play. Yet he knows he’ll have to lift his team up against a stronger green, whose league position is indicative of their solid form.

The Australian is yet to return after travelling back home to sort visa issues. Mauricio Afonso, the assistant coach, will once again take charge in his absence,

"Everyone knows that we have not been able to win in three matches but in the last two matches, we had our chances. I am sure that we will be able to break the duck in our next game," said Afonso.

Salgaocar FC find themselves at the comfortable end of the spectrum having picked up maximum points in a gritty display against Churchill and Mohameddan. Coach Derrick Pereira is wary of a looming Dempo backlash.

"Every match is tough," he said. "All teams have good quality players. On the day of the match it depends how you perform and how fit you are to go all the way. We have nagging injuries to Nicolau Colaco and Darryl Duffy but they will be fit to play."

This encounter is one for the ages. Dempo will look to prove a point and roll themselves back into the I-League contention with a loss being disastrous for the Goa based team’s morale and form there-on in. He will hope the likes of Jewel Raja and Jeje Lalpekhlua up their standard of performances and push their team through the tough times that seem to have temporarily befallen them.

Derrick Pereira and Salgaocar FC, meanwhile, know a wounded team’s only option is to go all-out attack. He will look to exploit their vulnerability at the back on the counter and play with as much as possession as possible to garner a strong foothold in the game.

The derby day never looked spicier.
