Churchill will probably face the longest 90 minutes in their history as they search for a win to avoid relegation against a strong Salgaocar team...
Salgaocar FC takes on Churchill Brothers in an all important round 26 match of the I-League at the Tilak Maidan, Vasco.
Salgaocar are targeting a second spot after a great run of victories in the run in to their final game of the season. They are coming into this game with a 12 day rest after an entertaining 3-3 draw against Sporting Clube de Goa after being two goals ahead early on.
Dudu Omagbemi has been a revelation since his arrival and his partnership with Darryl Duffy will be once again the threat Churchill will have to combat.
Duffy will also have the top scorer’s prize in mind, with 13 goals to his name he is just one behind leading the duo of Sunil Chhetri and Cornell Glenn.
But this match is all about Churchill and how they need a victory to avoid relegation and put an end to their horrific season.
Mohemmadan’s Sporting’s victory over Mumbai FC on Sunday means that Churchill will have to win to this game to stay in the league. After winning the I-league last season, going down would be the worst thing that can happen to the Goan side.
Their participation in the AFC Cup hasn’t helped either as they have had to play at least two games in a week.
Things couldn’t be worse as their playmaker Abdelhamid Shabana is suspended following a red card in the previous game and Sanjay Balmuchu remains a doubtful starter.
“We are without a few key players for the Salgaocar match. However I have full faith in this team and our boys will go on the pitch with the aim to get a victory out of the match,” Coach Mariano Dias said.
Salgaocar can take heart from their first round performance against Churchill Brothers where they walked away with a 1-0 victory.
