The result would have been much harsher on Betis had they not had Fabricio between the sticks. Pulled off a number of terrific saves which kept his side in the match, including a diving stop at the feet of Ronaldo and a fantastic parry from a Marcelo strike from the edge of the box.
Was dominant in the air all evening but looked slightly suspect when dealing with the trickery of the Madrid front line. Made a number of brave blocks on the edge of the area but his positioning could have been better.
Showed phenomenal athleticism throughout the match and hugged the right touchline for the entire game. Put in a few good crosses into the area but did not look to go beyond Jefferson Montero on the overlap, where there was plenty of space to hurt Madrid.
Got up and down the left wing terrifically all evening. Picked out Castro with an inch-perfect cross which led to the opening goal of the match. However, he perhaps should have made a lot more of the positions he found himself in in the final third as he was guilty of a number of overhit crosses. He did manage to pull off a few very dangerous dribbles, though.
Provided a cool head at the back for Betis whenever the match was being played at an extremely high tempo. Set up the back line well and communicated effectively with the rest of his defenders. Let his guard down for Higuain's goal when he attempted to play the Argentine offside.
Came very close to scoring when his dipping free kick clattered the bar in the first half. Showed plenty of endeavour and desire in midfield but his distribution could have been better as a number of potential Betis attacks did not get off the ground after misjudged passes.
Acted as the deep-lying playmaker for his side and flourished in the role. Was the catalyst for a number of pacey counterattacks which nearly led to goals for Betis. His presence in front of the defence also had a negative affect on Mesut Ozil's performance, as the German was not awarded a lot of space.
An impressive performance from the talented midfielder. Took the pressure off his side with a number of bursting runs into the Madrid half that set up a couple of counterattacks. Only negative would be that on a couple of occasions his final ball in the opposition third let him down.
Levelled proceedings with a fantastic volleyed finish from 15 yards to make it 2-2. Terrorised Madrid at times with his lightning pace and marauding runs through the middle and down the wings.
Caused Madrid problems with his physical presence in the area and did not give the defenders a moment's rest on the ball. Ran himself into the ground for his side and grabbed the opening goal of the match with an emphatic finish 10 minutes into the game.
Took the ball out of the air with brilliance in the lead-up to the opening goal of the match, and his masterful touch enabled him to set up Molina's strike. The assist summed up his night as he was composed and showed moments of real class.
Misjudged the flight of the ball for Salva's free kick and was lucky to be saved by the woodwork. However, could do nothing to prevent either Betis goal and did not have too many saves to make in the match apart from a double block from close range on the hour mark to deny Castro and Montero.
Typically got down the left-hand side with ease for the full 90 minutes and continued his impressive partnership with Ronaldo down the flank, which led to Madrid's second goal when he read the game well to drive into the box and pick out the Portuguese with a volleyed pass.
Allowed Betis a way back into the match when he misjudged the ball and chested it straight into the path of Montero, who volleyed home. Passing was very poor at times as he continually lost the ball when going forward.
Pulled off a number of terrific interceptions throughout the match, some of which were last-ditch challenges. Had to tuck inside and cover more space defensively whenever Pepe strayed out of position. His parried header led to Ronaldo's winner, but he made a block in the final seconds inside the box that looked liked handball, although replays were inconclusive.
Was guilty of venturing out of position a few times and had to be bailed out by Ramos. Had difficulty dealing with the pacey Betis wingers at times but ultimately had a solid match and did not award the attackers too much space to manoeuvre.
Was extremely lucky not to give away a penalty kick when the ball appeared to strike his arm in the 64th minute. This did not affect his game at all as he sprayed passes around the park magnificently and got stuck in in midfield, as he won back possession on a number of occasions.
A performance which justifies his inclusion in the starting XI. Broke up Betis counterattacks time and time again and provided a solid barrier in midfield with Xabi Alonso. However, still got a nosebleed whenever he moved into advanced positions.
Showed a couple of classy touches in the final third but was unable to produce a killer shot, pass, or cross. Looked out of sorts on the right-hand side and often found himself drifting inside, which only further crowded the area just in front of the Betis box.
Was not awarded a lot of room in the hole in front of the penalty area but still managed to hurt Betis on a couple of occasions with his passing ability. Picked out Higuain with a lovely through ball over the top of the home defence which led to Madrid's equalising goal.
Looked sharp in and around the penalty area in the first half and equalised the game for his side with a rasping shot from the right which beat Fabricio at the near post. However, as the game went on he drifted out of the match and was eventually substituted.
Should have scored just before half-time but his touch let him down when through on goal and was relatively anonymous in the first period. However, he came back from this in true Ronaldo style and won the game for his side with a neat finish and a volley to earn himself a decisive double in what could be a huge win.
- 13 Adán
- 18 Albiol
- 19 R. Varane
Came on for Kaka for the last quarter of an hour and provided composure and a cool head in midfield when Madrid were seeing out the match.
- 24 L. Diarra
Introduced with 10 minutes remaining but barely saw a glimmer of the ball.
