Paraguay won 5 - 3 on penalties

Live Commentary

  • So Paraguay are in the Copa America final. It's a shame for Venezuela, who have been great to watch, and they'll curse the woodwork after it denied them three times. Paraguay reach the final without actually winning a game so far this competition.
  • Veron to win it for Paraguay... Buries it.
  • Martinez.... Scores. In off the underside of the bar.
  • Franklin Lucena misses! Villar saves. Advantage Paraguay.
  • Christian Riveros.... Scores.
  • Rey for Venezuela... Scores. Another great penalty...
  • Lucas Barrios... Scores.
  • Next, it's Maldonado... And he scores. Great penalty.
  • First up, it's Ortigoza for Paraguay... And he scores. Top corner.

An astonishing statistic - Paraguay have played 510 minutes of Copa America football this summer, but have led for just 52 minutes.

  • 120' + 1'
That's the end of extra time. Penalties will decide this. Who will be the hero? Vega has built a reputation as a good shot-stopper, but Villar was on great form against Brazil, and saved one of the four penalties. Only time will tell who will go through here...
  • 120'
Arango swings in a great cross, and Villar comes and punches it away from Miku at the last moment. Twenty seconds to go.
  • 118'
Two minutes remain. Vizcarrondo and Da Silva are down after a clash of heads. This will break up Venezuela's rhythm further.
  • 117'
Paraguay have a shot! Martinez tries to chip Vega, but it's gone well over.
  • 114'
Maldonado has a strike from distance, it goes wide, seemingly via a deflection, but it's a goal kick. Villar doesn't take it - he has a 'muscle problem'....
  • 113'
Rondon shows some fantastic work to get down to the by-line, but his pull-back towards Miku has far too much on it. Miku and Rondon have done well together - I'm sure that they'll start together in the final or the third place play-off.
  • 112'
Eight minutes of extra time to go. Villar is in no hurry to take a goal kick.
  • 109'
Miku shows good pace, going down to the by line, but his attempted pull back to an unmarked Rondon is blocked away by Da Silva. Venezuela starting to pile on the pressure.
  • 108'
    Yellow Card D. Verón
  • 108'
Veron has picked up a yellow card for an attack on Miku. He's lucky that his side hasn't been reduced to nine men after that.
  • 106'
The Paraguay assistant manager has joined Santana and his boss on the red-card list during half time. 15 minutes to go.
  • 106'
Paraguay are walking a tight-rope, as Ortigoza gets into an argument with Rosales. Then again the Venezuela right-back should be careful - he's already been booked.
  • 105'
Rey swings it in, it's flicked on by Maldonaldo, and Rondon, on the turn, takes a swing, but he doesn't get the power on the ball to turn it in.
  • 103'
    Yellow/Red J. Santana
  • 103'
Jonathan Santana gets himself a second yellow card. Advantage Venezuela?
  • 102'
Santana gets to a loose ball and takes a pop shot, which Vega saves easily.
  • 100'
With Rondon taking the ball fantastically with his left foot, Villar gets to the ball in a nick of time with Miku looming.
  • 97'
Miku has a good chance to volley in the box after a great ball in from the left, but he mis-hits the ball. Paraguay must have made some deal with the devil because they're surviving this by the skin of their teeth and nothing else.
  • 96'
Arango finally comes up with a great free-kick, and unbelievably, it strikes the post. With Miku and Rondon looming, Veron clears the ball. Unbelievable scenes here, quite how Venezuela aren't winning is beyond me.
  • 93'
Venezuela denied a fortuitous goal. Maldonado has a wild shot which strikes Miku, and bounces agonizingly off the post. Miku can't get to the rebound and Paraguay survive again.
  • 92'
Yet again, the corner is wasted.
  • 92'
Martinez has a shot from distance which takes a deflection, resulting in a Paraguay corner.
  • 91'
    And we're back.
  • 90' + 2'
And that's the end of the second half. Thirty minutes of extra time awaits.
  • 90' + 1'
There will be two minutes of stoppage time separating us from an extra thirty minutes.
  • 90'
Arango whipped the ball back in, and it almost fell to Rondo, but Villar came out and claimed it before the Malaga man could latch on to the loose ball.
  • 89'
Cichero has another shot, it takes a heavy deflection, and results in a corner. Once again, it fails to clear the first man.
  • 88'
Venezuela play it long, but Miku fails to take advantage of a slip from Veron, and Paraguay survive again.
  • 87'
In the last five minutes and stoppage time in the previous game between these sides, there was three goals. I guess it's not over until it's over.
  • 85'
    Substitution C. González G. Maldonado
  • 85'
Maldonado is on for Venezuela - alongside Miku, Rondon and Arango, very aggressive from the underdogs.
  • 83'
37 minutes into the second half and still not a passage of play worth noting. Extra-time seems almost inevitable, spare a moment of brilliance for either side.
  • 81'
Substitution Roque Santa Cruz O. Martínez
  • 80'
Arango has a blast for all of 40 yards, but Villar gathers it fairly comfortable. Santa Cruz, who only came on five minutes ago, is down.
  • 79'
    Yellow Card J. Santana
  • 79'
Yellow card for Santana after a big tackle on Miku.
  • 78'
Venezuela starting to look to attack with just under 15 minutes to go. They're pushing for it, but can they get through the Paraguay defensive line?
  • 75'
Miku plays in Rondon at the edge of the box after Venezuela attack down the left. The Malaga forward is closed down immediately as Paraguay's defence stands as firm as it always has done this Copa.
  • 74'
Substitution Haedo Valdéz Roque Santa Cruz
  • 73'
    Substitution Alejandro Moreno Miku
  • 73'
Valdez crosses it from the left towards Estigarribia, but Cichero rises highest and puts it out for a Paraguay throw in, meanwhile, Miku has replaced Moreno as Venezuela look to attack.
  • 71'
    Substitution Edgar Barreto Marcelo Estigarribia
  • 71'
Barreto, who has been bright, but is clearly lacking fitness, is withdrawn in favour of Estigarribia, who was one of the few players to attack against Brazil, meanwhile, Miku is ready to enter the field for Venezuela.
  • 67'
Very poor second half so far after a promising opening period. With just over 20 minutes to play, are these two teams destined for extra-time again?
  • 63'
Barreto sends in a free-kick from which Christian Riveros wins a corner. Very scrappy right now.
  • 60'
Rosales, who has a beast of a throw, hurls it forward. Quite scrappy now, neither side wants to make a mistake. Gonzalez has a half-chance, but it's saved by Villar. Arango sends in another corner, but his delivery has been poor all day.
  • 57'
Barreto's free-kick strikes the wall and bounces out for a corner, which he'll take himself. Valdez get's his head to it, and it's easily gathered by Vega.
  • 55'
    Yellow Card Roberto Rosales
  • 55'
Paraguay have started the stronger of the two sides, but it's all a bit scrappy and as in the first half, they haven't had a clear cut chance to their name so far.
  • 54'
Paraguay have started the stronger of the two sides, but it's all a bit scrappy and as in the first half, they haven't had a clear cut chance to their name so far.
  • 52'
Valdez is played in by a good ball from Barrios - Vega looks to have made a mistake by charging off his line, but luckily for Venezuela, Valdez' shot strikes the stranded 'keeper.
  • 50'
Arango delivers another set-piece, but yet again, he fails to clear the first man.
  • 49'
A slow start to the second half, so far
  • 47'
Ivan Piris is down for Paraguay, and well he might be. Cesar Gonzalez clattered into him. Barreto wastes the resulting set-piece. We've had a Paraguay substitute at half time - Grenndy Perozo is off, and has been replaced by Jose Manuel Rey.
  • 46'
Substitution G. Perozo José Manuel Rey
  • 46'
And Paraguay have got the second half started.
  • Can Venezuela do it? All will be revealed in a few minutes with the second half imminent...
  • A good end to the half from Venezuela, who'll hope Arango can continue tonight, and hopefully in the final too. Paraguay controlled the game for a large section of the first half, but the Vinotinto will consider themselves to be unlucky to be level at the break, after the dubious decision against Vizcarrondo and striking the bar.
  • 45'
Gonzalez takes a set-piece for Venezuela, but he completely mis-hits is and it's gone well over. It's pretty much the last action in the first half, which has been fairly even, all things told.
  • 43'
SO CLOSE! Paraguay escape again after Rosales' cross meets Moreno's head and strikes the bar, while Rondon's follow-up is put out for a corner by Villar. The set-piece is wasted, but this is a good period of play from Venezuela.
  • 41'
Rosales plays a high ball to Arango, who attempts a long-range volley. Though the technique was flawless, Da Silva gets a block in.
  • 38'
A replay has shown that Salomon Rondon got the faintest of touches as the ball went goal-wards. Either a very good decision from the assistant referee (if he saw it) or a very bad one (he probably didn't see it, there were a lot of bodies blocking his view).
  • 37'
Arango delivers a free-kick it's cleared by the first man. Meanwhile, Haedo Valdez is down, again.
  • 35'
Arango swings the ball in, and Cichero heads it back to Vizcarrondo, who heads it in. The linesman rules it out, for reasons unknown. Venezuela should be a goal up, Paraguay can count their blessings once more.
  • 33'
Just the one shot from Venezuela so far - Paraguay have registered six.
  • 31'
Barreto crosses again, but the ball is far too close for Vega, who's dominating his own six yard box. All Paraguay at the moment. They've realised that they're the better team and can probably afford to throw a few players forward.
  • 29'
Barreto sends in another deep cross from a set-piece, and Da Silva gets his head to it, but there's not enough power and Vega gathers the ball easily.
  • 29'
Arango's back on, and though he's moving gingerly, he's running.
  • 28'
Juan Arango - the Venezuela captain and talisman is on a stretcher - this could be bad for Venezuela...
  • 25'
But not here. It's headed away at the near post, Valdez sprints the length of the pitch, is through on goal, but fails to find the target - an easy save for Vega, who puts it out for a corner. Lucas Barrios goes down when the ball is sent in, but only Barrios and god know why....
  • 24'
Great running from Salomon Rondon wins Venezuela their first corner of the game. Paraguay were undone at the end of the group match from a corner.
  • 21'
Alejandro Moreno is down after Paulo da Silva's hand makes contact with his face. Slight delay for treatment.
  • 18'
Valdez cuts inside to play a through-ball to Barrios, but it's slightly over-hit and easy for Vega.
  • 16'
Ortigoza crosses it into Barrios, who flicks it back to Barreto, who shoots first time, sending the ball over. Good play, bad finish.
  • 14'
The game has settled into a rhythm and the teams are exchanging periods of passing play in the centre of the pitch.
  • 12'
A poor pass from Vega to Cichero presents Valdez with a good chance, but he snatches at it and it goes high and wide. Wasted opportunity for Paraguay.
  • 11'
Arango swings in a free kick, but Barrios gets it away with his head. the ball falls to Vizcarrondo, who swings wildly at it, but makes no connection.
  • 10'
A bit of a mix-up from Paraguay. Rondon closes down Da Silva and Villar is made to lap up a deflected pass.
  • 8'
So close to 1-0! Veron meets the ball from a set-piece, and but for a great diving save from Vega, Paraguay would be a goal ahead here.
  • 7'
Juan Arango lays it off to Cichero with a great touch, and the Venezuela full-back shoots from distance - it doesn't trouble Villar, but good play from the Vinotinto.
  • 6'
Paraguay attack again down the right, and Marcos Caceres puts in a threatening ball, but it's slightly over-hit.
  • 6'
Paraguay attack again down the right, and Marcos Caceres puts in a threatening ball, but it's slightly over-hit.
  • 5'
Vizcarrondo wins a free-kick after an aerial tackle with Lucas Barrios.
  • 4'
Paraguay threaten for the first time. Haedo Valdez collects the ball outside the area in acres of space and his attempt to pull it back to Barrios is poor and Venezuela get it away.
  • 3'
Gonzalez is lucky to avoid a yellow card after a blatant and dive.
  • 2'
Vega gets an early touch in the Venezuela goal after Santana's poor cross from the left.
  • 1'
Venezuela have kicked off and attack immediately down the left. Paraguay's defence is as stern as ever and crowd them out.

  • And Venezuela are about to kick off...
  • So, can Venezuela do the unthinkable and challenge Uruguay for their first ever Copa America final? If you have any thoughts, musings, questions or predictions, you can tweet them to me (@eniskoylu). The teams are out and we're in the middle of the national anthems - kick off will be any minute now.
  • Venezuela, meanwhile have: Renny Vega; Roberto Rosales, Grenddy Perozo, Oswaldo Vizcarrondo, Gabriel Cichero; Franklin Lucena, Luis Seijas, Cesar Gonzalez, Juan Arango; Nicolas 'Miku' Fedor, Salomon Rondon
  • The teams are in, and there a few surprises - Paraguay line up with Justo Villar; Marcos Caceres, Paulo da Silva, Dario Veron, Ivan Piris; Edgar Barreto, Nestor Ortigoza, Christian Riveros, Jonathan Santana; Nelson Valdez, Lucas Barrios. No place for Estigarribia or Roque Santa Cruz, who is back from injury. Alcaraz misses out due to the red card he picked up against Brazil.
  • These two teams met in the group stage in a cracker of a match, with Venezuela scoring two goals in stoppage time to secure a point.
  • Plenty at stake here as this year's surprise-package Venezuela fight for a first-ever appearance in the final of the competition, while Paraguay will be looking to secure their place against Uruguay in what would be their first final appearance since 1963.
  • Good evening and welcome to the Goal.com coverage of the Copa America semi-final between Venezuela and Paraguay.
