An early Eric Brown goal and a second half brace from Katsumi Yusa were enough to give Santosh Kashyap's men a vital win against Shillong Lajong.ONGC defeated Shillong Lajong 3-0 in a match of round 12 of the I-League, played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi on Saturday. Eric Brown scored the opener early in the first half and Katsumi Yusa first doubled the advantage after the break and then scored again with ten minutes to go.
Under new boss Santosh Kashyap the bottom-placed ONGC, for whom this surely was a must win game, started the better of the two sides and looked to attack to the opposition. They were rewarded when Eric Brown put them ahead on 19 minutes. The ball was played into the box by Keniston C and Brown calmly slotted it past goalkeeper Lalthuammawia Ralte.
After that the visitors settled into the game and both teams created chances but were wasteful in front of goal. As a result Kashyap’s men went in to the break a goal to the good.
In the second half Lajong boss Desmond Bulpin brought on Boithang Haokip obviously trying to force a turn around, however it was to no avail. Almost immediately after, Katsumi Yusa popped up to double the home side’s lead. This time Brown turned provider as the he passed to Yusa before the Japanese dodged past a defender to slot the ball into the right corner. It was just the buffer that ONGC needed.
There was no way back after that for the men from the north-east as the hosts took control of the game. ONGC looked comfortable and it was the impressive Yusa who scored with ten minutes left to put the result beyond doubt.
Once again the menacing Eric Brown combined with Yusa and both men exchanged passes before the latter smashed the ball past the outstretched arms of Lalthuammawia Ralte in the Lajong goal.
The much needed three points see ONGC jump off the bottom of the table and out of the relegation zone while Shillong Lajong remain in 8th spot with 13 points.
