After a total of 20 shots throughout the game, Newcastle finally broke through at the depth for a much needed win that moves them further away from the relegation zone. Fulham defended valiantly throughout the game and a solitary piece of magic by Cisse proved to be their undoing,

Goal Papiss Cissé
GOAL FOR NEWCASTLE!! Papiss Cisse with the winner for the Magpies! A cross from the left was cleared as far as Cabaye, he unleashes a shot from 25 yards but Cisse expertly controls his shot and then buries his volley past Schwarzer. Superb from Cisse.
Yellow Card John Arne Riise
5 minutes of stoppage time at St. James' Park.
Slow build up play results in a good chance for Papiss Cisse and Newcastle. After retaining the ball, Sissoko finds Anita in space down the right, his cross is met well by Cisse but his header is well saved by Schwarzer. It doesn't look as though the Magpies will break the Fulham defence today.
Claims for a penalty from Shola Ameobi as he goes down as he shoots towards goal under a challenge from Hangeland, Kevein Friend isn't interested though.
Berbatov is furious as Jon Arne Riise opts to shoot from a extremely narrow angle instead of squaring the ball to the Bulgarian.
An attacking substitution by both sides as Hugo Rodallega replaces Stanislav Manolev for Fulham and Adam Campbell replaces Danny Simpson for Newcastle.
A good chance for Ameobi as Simpson crosses from the right but the Newcastle striker can't direct his header on target.
There is a sense of urgency from the Newcastle players when they regain the ball, however Fulham are making it frustrating for them by putting everyone behind the ball defending.
The game has seemed to calm down over the last few minutes, Fulham content on passing the ball around and slowing the tempo of the game.
Ameobi is making an impact on the game, protecting the ball well and fires a shot with his left foot which forces a save from Schwarzer.
Newcastle make the first substitution of the game with Shola Ameobi replacing the lively Yoann Gouffran, which is met with boo's from the Newcastle crowd.
Fulham respond after winning a free kick inside Newcastle's half, Riise drifts the ball goal-wards and the ball is met by the head of Berbatov who forces a great save by Tim Krul in the Newcastle goal.
Newcastle hit the bar! Corner comes in from Marveaux and it's Gouffran who wins the header and directs the ball towards the far post. Replays show Reither deflects the ball onto the post with his arm, then Cisse hits the post with the follow up. Incredibly unlucky for the Magpies.
Shouts for a penalty by the home crowd after Riise goes down under challenge from Riise but it would have been extremely harsh on the Norwegian.
Newcastle could regret missing the chances coming their way. This time Steven Taylor has a shot from inside the penalty area after being found by Cabaye, his shot is easily saved by Schwarzer though.
Another golden opportunity for the home side. Fluid build up play sees Gouffran played in behind down the left, he crosses in towards Cisse who has a heavy first touch and Schwarzer gathers.
Two more chances for the Magpies, firstly the resulting corner ends up with Cisse having a shot from the edge of the area forcing another corner from Schwarzer. Then Steven Taylor climbs highest to head wide from the second corner.
Newcastle hit the crossbar! Good initial work by Marveaux on the right, his cross is cleared to the edge of the box to the feet on Anita who unleashes a shot from 25-yards which is deflected off Frimpong onto the bar for a corner.
Yellow Card Philippe Senderos
Enoh has to be replaced due to his injury, Emmanuel Frimpong comes on to replace him.
The game restarts after a delay due to Enoh's injury, he's back on but isn't moving freely. The free kick is easily dealt with by Newcastle.
Yellow Card Moussa Sissoko
An early free kick for the visitors after Sissoko fouls Enoh, the Cameroonian has to receive treatment whilst Sissoko picks up a yellow card for his troubles.
Second half is underway, no changes for either side.
Goal.com's man at St. James' Park Andrew Kennedy sums up the first half action: "An enjoyable but goalless first-half of football at St. James' Park, with the hosts slightly edging it in terms of possession and chances. Papiss Cisse has failed to hit the target with a number of opportunities, but the intent is there, and Alan Pardew will be hopeful his side can take advantage in the second 45. However, the same clumsiness that has lead Newcastle to be just three points from the relegation zone has also reared its head, which will definitely give Fulham hope of snatching victory."
45' + 1'
Referee Kevin Friend blows for half time with the game evenly poised at 0-0. After a quiet opening 20 minutes the game livened up with Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse missing a hat-full of opportunities, Fulham ended the half the better side, frustrating the Magpies with their ball retention.
There will be one minute of added time in the first half at St. James' Park.
Fulham again look to be retaining the ball well after the spell of dominance by the home side, both teams are defending well however making chances hard to come by.
A melee inside the area from the corner, the ball lands at the feet of Manolev and his shot from four yards is well saved by Tim Krul.
The away side finally break with purpose with many players bursting into the Newcastle half. Berbatov has the ball on the left, he plays a delightful ball towards into the path of Ruiz but great defending by Yanga-Mbiwa blocks his shot and the ball goes out for a corner.
The away side are struggling to get out of their own half and when they clear there is no player in orange to chase the ball, all 11 Fulham players are in their own half.
The home side are definitely in the ascendency at the moment and Gouffran is causing the Fulham defence problems. Firstly he has a shot blocked by his own man, then he is wrongly ruled offside when clear through on goal.
Another chance for the Senegal international! Marveaux this time plays in the striker and he again tries to curl the ball into the net but misses the target again.
The free kick is initially cleared to Anita, he clips the ball back into the penalty area where Steven Taylor knocks the ball down into the path of Cisse, he shoots but his shot is expertly blocked by Hangeland.
Fulham seem to be struggling with the direct running of Sissoko who wins a free kick after being unfairly challenged by Berbatov.
Chance for Newcastle after strong running by Sissoko in the middle of the park, he plays the ball to Cisse on the left who tries to curl the ball past Schwarzer but his shot is just wide of the Australian's post.
And the away side force a corner as a Damien Duff cross is nervously turned behind by Yanga-Mbiwa, the corner is cleared by Newcastle.
It's the away side who seem to be the more comfortable on the ball, passing well and retaining the ball with ease as they look to carve out opportunities.
Cabaye has a shot from 30 yards which goes sailing high and wide, that sums up the opening 20 minutes so far.
It looks as though Jonas Gutierrez is surprisingly being moved to cover Santon at left-back, with Anita slotting into the center of midfield.
A worry for Newcastle fans as left-back Davide Santon pulls up with what looks like a hamstring injury, he'll be replaced by Vurnon Anita.
The St. James' Park faithful are trying to do their best to urge their side forward and Frenchman Gouffran responds by chasing down a lost cause and wins a throw for the home side.
The Magpies retain possession however with the ball reaching Moussa Sissoko on the right, he goes past a Fulham defender and crosses well to the head of Steven Taylor who can't get his header on target.
Newcastle left-back wins the first corner of the game with tenacious play down Fulham's right side. The corner took by Marvaeux is met by the head of a Fulham defender.
Karagounis whips in the free-kick from the left but Newcastle defend the dangerous looking ball well and retain possession.
Damien Duff wins a free-kick for Fulham deep inside the Newcastle half.
Newcastle begin to respond with Danny Simpson making a run down Fulham's left, his cross is too high for Cisse and the visitors clear.
Good play by Berbatov brings the first chance of the game. The Bulgarian receives the ball and takes a shot with the outside of his boot which goes just over the bar. Lovely technique.
Slow start to the proceedings, both teams content to not push the action early on.
We're off at St. James' Park!
The corresponding fixture earlier in the season ended with Fulham the victors in a 2-1 win at Craven Cottage. However, none of the scorers that day are playing this afternoon. Only Hugo Rodallega has a place on the bench with Steve Sidwell suspended and Hatem Ben Arfa injured.
Alan Pardew's men are in real danger of being swamped into the relegation battle, sitting only three points above the dropzone. Whilst Martin Jol's men are unbeaten in their last four and just one point away from the magical 40.
And the Fulham team is: Schwarzer; Riether, Senderos, Hangeland, Riise; Manolev, Enoh, Karagounis, Duff; Ruiz; Berbatov. Subs: Etheridge, Hughes, Richardson, Frimpong, Emanuelson, Frei, Rodallega
First of all, the two teams. Newcastle: Krul; Simpson, S.Taylor, Yanga-Mbiwa, Santon; Marveaux, Sissoko, Cabaye, Gutierrez; Gouffran, Cisse. Subs: Elliot, Williamson, Anita, Bigirimana, Obertan, Campbell, Ameobi.
