The Goan continued their fantastic start to the season as they downed Mumbai in their own backyard...
Mumbai FC were beaten 1-3 by Salgaocar FC at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in a fifth round I-League encounter on Friday afternoon. A quick-fire brace from Darryl Duffy and a late goal by Gilbert Oliveira was enough to sink the home side who had pulled one back through Jayesh Rane.
Khalid Jamil chose not make any changes to his side with Orok Essien and Sanjdar Ahmadi as the two strikers upfront.
Derrick Pereira was forced to make change to his starting eleven from the last game as Cartan Costa was handed a start in place of the injured Augustin Fernandes. Claude Gnakpa was surprisingly left on the bench in favour of Gagandeep Bali.
Just two minutes into the game as Haroon Amiri rattled the framework of the Salgaocar goal with an attempt from 40-yards out. The Mumbai FC skipper however was unlucky not to open his account as the ball went straight into the hands of custodian Karanjit Singh after deflecting off the post.
Only a couple of minutes later Daryl Duffy invaded the opponent’s box, but his run was cut short which saw the visiting side ask for a penalty. However the referee instead booked Duffy for a dive.
Salgaocar seemed to dominate the proceedings in the middle of the pitch with some short passes amongst themselves.
In the 20th minute, the Salgaocar bench erupted in protest as the referee waved play on when Gilbert Oliviera was clearly taken out by the Mumbai defense.
A great opportunity came Mumbai's way in the 24th minute as Ashutosh Mehta's corner was met spot on by Orok Essien, but he headed it wide under pressure from Salgaocar defenders.
Salgaocar eventually broke the deadlock as Duffy capitalized on a brilliant through-ball sent by Rahul Kumar from the left. He latched onto it and wrongfooted the two centre-backs and scored past the Mumbai FC custodian.
Five minutes later he scored his second of the evening by putting his head to good use from a Gilbert Oliviera cross.
Gnakpa had a chance to add his name on the scoresheet but sent the ball into the orbit after being released by Dawson Fernandes. Valeriano Rebello made an important tackle on Duffy to deny him an opportunity to shoot in the final quarter of the game.
A cross from the left in the 85th minute saw Karanjit Singh made the save from the first attempt. The ball went as far as Jayesh Rane who slotted it past the Salhaocar custodian who stood no chance whatsoever to stop it.
However just when it looked like Mumbai FC could spark a late comeback Gilbert Oliviera’s goal confirmed the three points for the visitors.
