Mohun Bagan - Shillong Lajong Preview: The Mariners have only pride to play for

In what is an inconsequential match, Mohun Bagan need a win to salvage some pride for their crestfallen fans...

Mohun Bagan take on Shillong Lajong in what is the last match for both teams in this season's I-League. While Shillong Lajong are placed comfortbaly on the table at fifth spot, the Kolkata outfit have just scraped through sitting at 11th just above the relegation zone.

In the reverse fixture this season, it was a stalemate in Shillong with the match ending 1-1. In their last match, Mohun Bagan could only play out a goalless draw against United SC while Lajong too were held at home by rivals, Rangdajied United.

However Thangboi Singto is buyoant as this is Lajong's highest points tally in the I-League and he would look at all three points to go and grab the 4th position.

“The match is a crucial one as a win will give us a better chance to finish in top four. So the team has to be highly motivated. And I believe the players know that and will give their all on Sunday.”

He also made it a point that the fans would expect the players to give their all in the match and he was certainly expecting more than 100% from his players.

“The team will like to sincerely thank the Lajong Faithfuls whose undying support throughout the season has been excellent.”

The north east outfit will miss striker Uilliams Souza due to an injury while Robin Gurung is suspended.

Meanwhile Karim Bencherifa's future at the club isn't secure for next season. With Mohun Bagan having named four coaches including the Moroccan in contention for the hot seat next term, a win would certainly be a fitting gift for the manager should this be his final game for Bagan.

“You have to understand that to win trophies, you need the right ingredients.  But I’m honoured that I could coach till the last day of my contract,” said Bencherifa.

Star striker Odafa Okolie too has been reportedly released and won't be available for the encounter so Bencherifa will have to rely on CS Sabeeth to bail him out of trouble.

“It is a strange atmosphere where you have nothing much to play for. But, my mentality is to win every match and we will go in with the same resolve on Sunday,” he mentioned.
