An important win at the Kalyani stadium on Sunday saw Mohun Bagan move a position better in the I-League standings...Mohun Bagan have given themselves some breathing space after defeating Pailan Arrows 2-0 in a rescheduled round 11 match of the I-League played at the Kalyani stadium, on Sunday. Coach Karim Bencherifa has successfully ensured that Bagan do not get relegated by guiding them to safety.
Nigerian goal-machine Odafa Okolie opened the scoring in the 26th minute, while Namibian national Quinton Jacobs scored his first goal for the Mariners to double his side's lead in the 50th minute.
C.S. Sabeeth's shot was blocked by the Arrows defender Shouvik Ghosh, with Odafa lurking around the area to slot in the rebound to give his side the lead.
The Green and Maroon should have been 2-0 up but for Odafa to send his shot wide from a Jacobs' cross.
Quinton Jacobs' free-kick was the highlight of the second half, as the Bagan midfielder's set-piece brushed off the hands of rival keeper Soram Poirei Angamba before nestling into the back of the net in the 50th minute.
Angamba was however equal to the task to block a clear shot on goal by Odafa eight minutes later, while the custodian was relieved to see Sabeeth shoot another attempt wide of the target in the 63rd minute.
The win takes Mohun Bagan tally to 25 points, the same as Shillong Lajong, from 24 matches. The north eastern outfit have played an additional game, and remain a spot above the Kolkatan outfit due to a better head-to-head record.
Pailan Arrows meanwhile lie 12th on the standings board, with 23 points from 25 outings.
