The Goan outfit will hope to register three points in order to close the gap at the top…
Mohammedan Sporting will face the Sporting Clube de Goa challenge in round 19 of the I-League at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata on Friday.
The Black and Whites have a point more than bottom placed Rangdajied United and have a game in hand. They are in desperate need of points if they are to save their season and once again get relegated.
“There’s no denying that we are under pressure because of the threat of relegation. We need to play freely,” said coach Sanjoy Sen.
The Kolkata clubs are suffering from ‘fatigue’ given the number of matches each have played this season.
Mohammedan have scored the least number of goals in the I-League this season (13) and shall come up against the second best defense in Sporting Clube de Goa (14 goals conceded).
Penn Orji hasn’t been in top form for Mohammedan while the pressure to score goals is only on the shoulders of Josimar Martins. The form of Syed Rahim Nabi and several other experienced players in their ranks has been poor to say the least.
On the other hand, Sporting will look to return to winning ways after their 1-1 draw against Pune FC.
Nigerian midfielder Martins Ekwueme, who has been signed for the injured Arturo Garcia could debut alongside fellow countryman Ogba Kalu.
“We aim to come back to Goa with the three points,” said coach Oscar Bruzon.
The Goan outfit will reply on Boima Karpeh and Victorino Fernandes upfront to lead their frontline.
Earlier this season, Mohammedan had registered a 3-1 victory over Sporting in Goa in a game the latter dominated but failed to take the chances that came their way.
Bruzon would hope that Karpeh is in top form for the game and avenge their defeat to the Kolkata side.
