Did not have much chance of saving Milner's opener given he was unsighted and had to deal with a deflection. Could do little about Aguero's powerful effort, either.
Defended dependably after a bright start from Milner but did not have much opportunity to get forward as Young tended to cross the ball early rather than wait for the overlap.
Made his presence felt down the right flank, charging up the wing purposefully and using his speed to ensure he did not neglect his defensive duties. Found Clichy tough to beat when he ventured forward, though he hit the outside of the post with one speculative effort.
Dealt easily with the crosses City sent in his direction and headed United level with a close-range effort that hit Kompany on its way in. He was exposed by Aguero, though, when the striker streaked past him to put City in front.
Marshalled the defence well for the most part, keeping Tevez and Silva away from dangerous areas, but occasionally dropped too deep, allowing City to get shots away from the edge of the penalty area.
Saw plenty of the ball and spread it well when United counterattacked, but was guilty of an uncharacteristically ill-judged flick that handed City possession in the build-up to Milner's opening goal.
Not really the sort of game that suits him. He was as accurate with the ball as ever, but rarely got a grip on the game high up the field due to United's deep defensive line.
Somewhat predictable on the left, almost always checking back before moving inside to cross. None of his deliveries from the flank really came off but, when he did take on his man on one occasion in the first half, he left one defender for dead before forcing an excellent block from Nastasic. It would have been nice to see him be more positive more often.
R. van Persie
Struggled to shake off the close marking of Nastasic and Kompany, seeing less of the ball than any other outfield player in United's starting XI, but demonstrated that his magic left foot remains a threat even when he is off-colour with a marvellous free kick that Jones nodded in.
Started encouragingly, striding through the centre of the pitch on the counterattack, but his final ball let him down, particularly at the end of one two-on-two break with Rooney. Faded as the game wore on.
Stretched the City defence on occasion with his passing on the break, but never really picked up the ball in threatening areas near Hart's goal and some of his crossing was disappointing.
Like De Gea, he did not have too much to deal with aside from the goal he conceded. Cannot really be blamed given the pace and swerve on Van Persie's free kick, although it did fly through his six-yard box.
Occasionally stretched by Young on the left, but to no real effect. Most of City's play went down the left, so he was not massively involved.
Could not keep track of Jones as the centre-back nodded Van Persie's free kick off the City captain and in. That was a blemish on an otherwise fine game, as he stepped in decisively to frustrate United on the break and kept a lid on Van Persie for much of the contest.
Got across well to make an important block on Young, and did a fine job in keeping Van Persie and Rooney at bay for the vast majority of the match. Looks to be an outstanding partner for Kompany.
An excellent display at left-back. He was heavily involved in City's build-up play, as many of their attacks progressed down his flank, and defended decisively when Rafael poured forward from right-back.
Was not really suited to the sort of service that often came in on the flanks, but admirably did all he could to make an impact in the box when crosses flew in. Looked the most likely of any City player to open United up, but was fairly effectively crowded out for the most part.
Did well to hold on to the ball and lay it back for Milner to open the scoring having been cut off by Rafael. Neat enough, but did not have much joy otherwise as he probed through the middle.
Sat deep and brought the ball out of defence, helping to nullify Van Persie and Rooney by providing an extra physical presence. Very efficient with the ball, but did not often venture forward.
Given more opportunity to venture forward than usual and combined his neat passing with some industrious tackling.
Engineered a couple of openings early on, crossing low towards the near post, but his involvement faded until he drilled home a left-footed shot that took a deflection on its way to the bottom corner. Full of endeavour as always.
Does not look overly suited to a lone striking role and had little service to feed off all night. The crosses that came in were easily defended by the much taller United centre-backs.
