The youngster continued his good form in this competition but conceded his first goals. Surprisingly he was the busier of the two keepers in the first half, but as United began to dominate in the second he found himself with little to do. He had no chance with Ambrose's wonder goal, he did his best but even at full stretch he was unable to get anywhere near it.
The defender used the game to get back some of his match fitness following a recent spell on the sidelines, and he was calmness personified as he kept close tabs on Easter. He also covered well for both Evans and Rafael, showing the awareness he has despite his young age.
Had a busy first half dealing with the pacy Scannell but he was able to use his own pace to stay close to the forward and limit his crossing opportunities. After Scannell hobbled off his night got a bit easier but, like his brother, his game was ended early and he was replaced by Pogba midway through the second half.
Captain for the night but he looked shaky and was lucky to be playing alongside the impressive Smalling. He improved as the game went on but had to be helped out of a couple of awkward situations by his goalkeeper and fellow defenders.
Lively, and very tight to Zaha and Clyne when they attacked down the Palace right. Made good interceptions and broke with pace. Was replaced by Fryers in the 37th minute after pulling up with a hamstring problem.
Was very much United’s controller in the centre of pitch, playing deeper the his partner Park. Neat short passing mixed with some fabulous long range balls to pick out Valencia and Macheda.
The winger caused Moxey problems down United’s right but was also caused into defensive action to support Rafael when the Palace full back provided support to Scannell. Missed the game’s first clear cut chance in the 52nd minute when he robbed Gardner but he dragged his shot wide of Price’s goal.
Playing in the centre of the midfield is not something he is asked to do very often but the South Korean performed well alongside Gibson. At times he did struggle against the powerful Dikgacoi and was pushed off the ball. When Rafael was substituted midway through the second half Park dropped into right full back to allow Pogba to partner Gibson in the centre of midfield.
Left wing really isn’t the Italians’ position and he showed how much he prefers playing upfront by drifting off his wing on numerous occasions and he really did not enjoy the defensive duties he was required to help out with. When he did move into a more central position in the second half he still struggled to make much of an impact on the game but when he was pulled down by McCarthy he stepped up a slotted the penalty home to get his side back into the game.
The Bulgarian drifted in and out of the game, he linked midfield and attack neatly but chances were hard to come by for the 30 year old. He was replaced by Morrison at half time.
The striker was lively in the opening exchanges but Gardner stayed very close to him and gave him very little room to work in. He tried his best to link up with Berbatov and create space for a sight at goal but he rarely tested Price. He switched with Macheda in the second half and spent his time on the left wing, where he performed a lot better than his Italian team mate but still failed to really test Clyne.
The keeper was rarely tested in the first half but he was much the busier of the two stoppers in the second half as United began to dominate possession. He made two good saves from Morrison at the beginning of the half
The full back was keen to get forward at every opportunity and support Zaha very well down the right side. When it came to defensive duties he handled Macheda very easily in the first half and coped with Diouf in the second. He was able to use his pace to match the United players and he was strong in the tackle when he needed to be.
Had a good battle with Valencia during the first half and he looked dangerous in support of Scannell down the left, but he fell awkwardly just before half time and was replaced by Ambrose at the break.
Used his experience to keep Diouf reasonably quiet in the opening 45 minutes, he also supported McCarthy in handling Berbatov. The second half presented more of a dilemma as Morrison slotted into the hole and the defender didn’t really have anyone to mark, he struggled to cope with the movement of Macheda and Morrison as United got back into the game.
A strong performance in the centre of midfield alongside O’Keefe and Dikgacoi, the experienced Wright worked tirelessly to keep his side in the game. He made good runs going forward but his main responsibility was to deal with the constantly improving United midfield, something he never stopped trying to do.
Hardly left Berbatov’s side in the first half znd looked solid alongside Gardner. When he had Macheda to deal with in the second half he struggled against the strikers pace and trickery but still coped well, that is until he was penalised for holding onto the Italians shirt and Macheda scored from the resulting spot kick.
The forward was lively throughout the first half and caused Rafael problems with his quick feet and neat tricks. He linked well with Easter and Zaha but picked up an injury midway through the half and never recovered, he was replaced by Parr just before half time.
The youngster looked comfortable on the ball and eager to get forward, he was not worried about defending either as he got stuck in against Gibson and Park. He continued to work hard in the second half and linked especially well with Zaha down the Palace left.
He was eager to impress on the big stage and he caused Evans lots of problems with his pace and power. He spent the first half on the right side and was the dangerman for the visitors, although his link up play could have been better. He moved onto the left in the second half and had plenty of success against make shift full back Park.
The South African was strong in the centre of the pitch and broke up a lot of United attacks, he also showed a good eye going forward and was unlucky not to create a chance for Zaha in the opening 20 minutes. The introduction of Pogba gave him a new opponent to battle with and he never shirked a tackle against the youngster.
Started the game very brightly and had some good opportunities but he was unable to test Amos. He worked hard throughout the game to pressurise the United defence but he found Smalling in very good form. He was replaced by Murray in the 74th minute.
- 34 A. Lindegaard
The youngster replaced Fabio after 37 minutes and despite some nervous early touches he performed well at full back and was able to restrict Zaha’s opportunities.
- 38 M. Keane
Replaced Rafael in the 64th minute, he slotted into central midfield alongside Gibson. He was very powerful, full of running and keen to test Price when he had the chance. He had one long range drive that was just over the bar with Price well beaten.
On for Berbatov at half time and looked keen to make an impact on the game. He played in the hole behind Macheda and cause problems for Palace with his energy and eye for goal. He tested Price in the opening stages of the half with an effort from the edge of the penalty area but the keeper saved well.
- 52 L. Cole
- 53 J. Lingard
- 1 J. Speroni
- 38 P. Ramage
Replaced the injured Scannell just before half time, and slotted into the left back position left by Moxey’s injury in the second half. He showed good pace to keep close to Valencia and made some neat passes to release Zaha.
- 15 M. Jedinak
Replaced Moxey at half time and provided the Eagles with balance on the left side of attack. He set the game alight with a wonder goal in the 65th minute from 35 yards, he collected the ball in the centre of the pitch and fired it past Amos to send the visiting fans crazy.
Replaced Easter in the 74th minute and worked hard up front but had little to work with in the remainer of the seocnd half, but he burst into life in extra time and got in front of Evans to head home an Ambrose free kick in the 97th minute.
