The match is currently following the same pattern as United inflict a lot possession, while Palace defend with their lives.
Fulltime at Old Trafford and Crystal Palace beat Manchester United! Murray's extra-time winner was enough after intense United pressure in the closing stages.
Two brilliant openings for United there! Firstly, Valencia's cross goes straight through the penalty area but is untouched. Then Diouf gets the ball at the far post, but when he tries to get the ball on to his right foot, he is dispossessed at the far post.
Good chance for Diouf! Valencia crosses from the right, but Diouf's header at the far post is cleared in front of the goal.
Zaha looks to catch United on the break single-handedly, but Evans does well to stop the youngster.
Yellow Card Darron Gibson
Good opening for United there, but the chance is wasted. Morrison, again plays a clever flick and space opens up for Smalling, but the defender passes to Park when he could have shot, and McCarthy clears.
Morrison finds Macheda on the edge of the box with a clever flick. The Italian picks out Valencia who crosses, but McCarthy does well to head clear.
Murray gets away from Evans and Smalling before cutting back on to his right foot and shoots, but it was poor.
And the action is back underway. Almost a chance inside the first twenty seconds as Smalling crosses, but Macheda can't quite get there.
Halftime of extra time and Crystal Palace go into the short-break in the lead. Can they hang on for the second 15 minute period?
Here is Alex's post-goal update: Well no one saw that coming and it's the two subs who combined to put Palace in front again! "There's only one Dougie Freedman" sing the Palace fans but it's the impact of Darren Ambrose that has sparked this game into life. His excellent free kick nodded in by Glenn Murray in the 97th minute....I would not like to be in the United dressing room if it stays like this!
Ambrose with a great effort! The attacker decidesd to have a go from range again, this time from a free-kick, however Amos is equal to it.
Another great chance for United! Macheda manages to bundle his way past McCarthy and Gardner, but places his finish just wide.
United almost reply immediately, but Gibson's volley goes inches wide.
Goal Glenn Murray
GOAL!!!! Crystal Palace take the lead! The free-kick was swung in from the left and Murray rose highest to head home. Astonishing stuff here!
Brilliant play from Zaha as the winger flicks the ball past Park and wins a free-kick on the left wing. Very good opportunity here.
90' + 3'
Zaha tries to counter on United, beating Valencia and Pogba before shooting from 35 yards, but it is easy pickings for Amos as the shot trickles along the floor.
90' + 1'
We're edging closer and closer to extra-time here. Both sides are pushing for a late winner, but as has been the case for much of this match so far, the two sides are cancelling each other out.
Murray finds the side-netting! Fryers sloppily gives the striker possession, but his effort from an angle hits the side-netting.
Morrison goes for goal from a way out, but his strike goes harmlessly wide. Very disappointing effort.
Chris Smalling in a heap at the moment after catching a boot in the face.
United fail to close Ambrose down again, but thankfully for them, his effort this time crashes into Jonny Evans.
Macheda unlucky not to get a chance there! Valencia's cross is brought down well by the Italian, flicks it past the first defender but before he can shoot the ball is hacked away.
Ambrose wins a header from Zaha's deep cross, but his effort is easy for Amos.
Morrison tackled on the edge of the Palace area after beating the first man, but Diouf was in a great position to his left.
Macheda almost thought he was in once again as Morrison wins possession just outside the Palace area, but the Italian is called offside.
Diouf wastes a good position there as Morrison does well to find the striker on the left side of the area, but his shot goes well over.
Here's an update from Alex: There were 4000 happy Palace fans five minutes ago but they have been silenced by Macheda's penalty kick. A little harsh on McCarthy but the italian finished it calmly.
There is no doubt about it, but this half has been so much more lively that the first 45 minutes. The game appears to have settled a little following those crazy minutes, but this game is there fore the winning.
Penalty Goal Federico Macheda
GOAL!!! United equalise from the penalty spot! The man who won the spot-kick, Kiko Macheda, confidently stepped up and sent Price the wrong way.
Penalty for United! Macheda is brought down after having his shirt-pulled in the area. Referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.
Goal Darren Ambrose
Paul Pogba almost replies immediately, but his volley is deflected wide.
GOAL!!!!! What a goal!!! Darren Ambrose is given possession near the centre-circle and advance a little before smashing an effort from some 40 yards into the top corner! What a brilliant strike that is! Incredible!
The other twin is now off after a slight knock. Young French midfielder Paul Pogba is on.
Lovely move by United. Ball is played into Morrison who flicks the ball to Macheda. The Italian dummies the ball for himself before shooting left footed. His strike is comfortably high and wide, but it was a good effort.
Another chance for Morrison! Valencia flicked a clever ball into the area for the 18 year-old. but his strike from a tight angle is well-saved by the feet of Lewis Price.
Nearly a chance for United! Valencia crossed from the right, but Macheda failed to connect with the ball correctly and then it wouldn't fall kindly enough for Morrison or Diouf.
Here is an update from Alex Fisher at Old Trafford: Someone has clearly told the United fans they can make some noise, they are in full voice now. In can be no coincidence that the much talked about Ravel Morrison is now on the pitch, he has injected life into the United attacks.
Good move from United. Fryers, Park and Morrison all link up before Morrison is given enough space to shoot and his long-range effort stung the hands of Price.
What a chance for United! Anthony Gardner tries to be clever near the halfway line, but Valencia tackles him and charges through on goal, however his effort is tipped round the post. Should've been 1-0 there.
Good delivery from Gibson, but Jonny Evans couldn't quite get his head on it at the far post.
Good play by Park as he marches forward before being brought down by Parr. Gibson standing over the free-kick.
Morrison was very nearly in there as Valencia finds Macheda and the Italian looked to feed the young midfielder into the area, but his pass was just behind Morrison.
United starting on the front foot, keeping possession well, considerably better than in the first half. Fryers plays in a decent low-cross, but it's cut-out by Palace defenders before it can get to Macheda.
We're back underway for the second half.
Here's another update from Alex: So there is nothing between these two sides after 90 minutes and extra time is on it's way. Apart from Ambrose's wonder goal this game has been short on quality, Morrison has been lively for United and you would think their superior fitness would win through after another 30 minutes. However the dreaded penalty shoot out is waiting ominiously around the corner!
And normal-time comes to an end at Old Trafford with the two sides level. Extra-time awaits us.
45' + 2'
Halftime at Old Trafford, and here is another update from Alex: Well we could be in for a long night tonight if things don't change in the second half, Palace have had the better opportunities but in truth it's been a poor half of football and for it to be goal less is appropriate.
45' + 1'
Fryers fires a lofted ball to the far post, but Price collects above Valencia and Diouf.
Half-chance for United as Antonio Valencia's cross is met at the far-post by a Diouf over-head kick, but it goes just over. It was a decent effort from the Senegal international.
Fryers gives away possession, but Rafael puts in two brilliant tackles to put an end to the Palace attack.
Macheda and Berbatov get in each other's way there. Rafael plays in a cross and both for the same ball, but the Bulgarian flicks the ball onto the arm of Macheda.
United trying to create an opening, but Valencia plays the ball forward for Macheda, but the Italian loses possession when trying to find Rafael. Somes up his evening so far.
Fabio Da Silva
First substitution of the evening as Fabio is forced off with a hamstring knock. 19 year-old Zeki Fryers comes on in his place.
Scannell wastes a decent opening there. Valencia sloppily gives away possession in his own half before O'Keefe finds Scannell, but the winger shoots wide.
After a few minutes of stoppages due to Scannell picking up a knock, we're back underway.
Not something you see every week; a foul-throw. Mame Biram Diouf goes over to take the throw and barely lifts the ball over his head. Blatant and careless.
Yellow Card Fabio Da Silva
First yellow card of the evening as Fabio catches Zaha late on the half-way line. Could be a tricky 60 minutes ahead for Fabio.
Decent attack from United there. Valencia played a ball with the outside of his foot, finding Rafael on the wing. The Brazilian played in his cross, but Macheda couldn't quite reach it with his head.
Fabio smacks the ball forward searching for Berbatov, but it goes all the way through to the goalkeeper.
Macheda is having a very disappointing and quiet evening so far. Had very few touches, and has missed his control on several occasions.
Here is a brief update from out man at the stadium, Alex Fisher: It's fair to say that this game needs a spark to get it going, so far the quality hasn't been great and Palace have had the better chances. All the noise continues to come from the away fans, even the famous Stretford End is quiet tonight.
Berbatov currently receiving treatment on the sidelines. Appears to be having trouble with his right ankle. United have one striker on the bench, 18 year-old Will Keane.
Berbatov now struggling with a slight knock. The striker jumped up to challenge in the air and on the return to the floor he may have tweaked something.
Zaha with another chance as the youngster is given space by Smalling before smashing over from an angle. Very promising opening 20 minutes so far from Zaha.
Almost a great chance for United! Valencia cut inside, playing a one-two with Gibson before looping a ball over the Palace defence for Berbatov, but the Bulgarian's shot went wide after some effective pressure.
Dimitar Berbatov drops deep and gives some re-assuring touches before dribbling down the right win. Although he has barely had a touch, Berbatov appears the only United player capable of causing Palace problems.
Shouts for a free-kick, or penalty for Palace there. Zaha was played in on Fabio's inside, but the Brazilian brought the winger down. Referee waved play on, but Palace could count themselves unlucky.
Another questionable back-pass for Amos to deal with as Evans sends one back on the half-volley.
Fabio gives away a free-kick in the centre-circle after a late challenge from behind, although there was nothing malicious involved.
United's passing and possession retension has been notably poor during the opening 15 minutes or so here, particularly in the midfield with Darron Gibson guilty of a few wayward passes.
United almost managed to get themselves into a sticky situation there as Smalling's back-pass was a tough one for Amos, but the England Under-21 international 'keeper cleared.
Palace gaving a good bout of possession here with each pass getting greeted with mass cheers from the travelling fans.
Very nearly a good opening for United. Valencia's cross fell to Macheda out on the left. The Italian proceeded to beat his man before playing in a cross with his left foot, but no one gambled to meet it.
Good covering defending from Smalling there. Easter brought down a ball played over Jonny Evans, but the England international came across to concede a corner.
Gibson boots a long-ball over the top of the Palace defence, but Price collects ahead of Diouf.
Some more exciting play from Zaha as the 19 year-old tricks his way past Macheda, soon followed by Fabio. Good opening from the youngster.
Wilfried Zaha looked to catch United on the counter, running with the ball all the way to the opponents' area, but his effort goes miles over.
30 seconds in and United win a corner as Antonio Valencia's attempted cross is deflected behind, but Gibson's ball was very poor and cleared at the front post.
Here we go! United kick us off.
Before we get underway, the two teams and supporters are having a minute of applause for Gary Speed, the former Premier League player and Wales manager who passed away on Sunday at the age of 42.
Jonny Evans, who captains United this evening, will be making his 100th appearance for the Old Trafford club, while Fabio da Silva will make his 50th.
All six of the teenagers on United's bench were involved in the club's FA Youth Cup winning team last season with Ravel Morrison and Paul Pogba being the most well-known.
The spotlight is undoubtedly fixed on Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson has named 11 changes from the 1-1 draw with Newcastle at the weekend. Chris Smalling makes a return from injury, while Darron Gibson looks set for his first start of the season and six teenagers are given places on the bench.
The Crystal Palace side is: Price; Clyne, McCarthy, Gardner, Wright; Scannell, Dikgacoi, O’Keefe, Moxey; Zaha, Easter Subs: Speroni, Parr, Ambrose, Iversen, Jedniak, Murray, Ramage
