Live Commentary

  • Well, that's all from our LIVE coverage of events at Wembley. Manchester City have won the League Cup for the first time since 1976. Thank you for joining this afternoon - goodbye for now!
  • For Sunderland, attention now turns to the Premier League as they fight desperately for survival in the top flight. If Poyet's men play like they did today, though, they will have a great chance.
  • That's one down, three do go for Manuel Pellegrini. It's a mammoth ask to to the quadruple - especially with their deficit against Barcelona in the Champions League - but the Chilean manager will be delighted and relieved to get his first piece of silverware in Manchester.
  • The favourites have done it, but they did it the hard way. Gus Poyet will be incredibly proud of his players this afternoon, but no-one could do a thing about Toure's fantastic equaliser and Nasri's beautifully struck shot.
  • That's FULL TIME at Wembley!! MANCHESTER CITY HAVE WON THE CAPITAL ONE CUP!! Two world-class goals turned things around in the second half after Borini's early strike, but Sunderland couldn't come back and Navas sealed it late on to make it 3-1.
  • 90' + 5'
City are almost in again as Nasri steals the ball from Ki, but the referee blows for a free kick. We're into further added time, but the result is beyond doubt now...
  • 90' + 4'
Kolarov and Nasri stay close to each other on the left-hand side, winning a throw as O'Shea knocks it out. Just seconds left, and both sets of fans are singing their hearts out.
  • 90' + 3'
    Yellow Card Negredo
  • 90' + 3'
Negredo is penalised for a foul just inside the Sunderland box, and for some reason then boots the ball into the stands. A very odd decision from the striker, who gives the referee no choice but to book him.
  • 90' + 2'
Into the second of four minutes' added time, and it'll just be a procession now, really. There's surely no time for two Sunderland goals.
  • 90' + 1'
It's very harsh on Sunderland, who have produced an absolutely mighty perofmance this afternoon, but City's class has shone through in this second half.
  • 90'
    Assist Yaya Touré
  • 90'
    Goal Jesús Navas González
NAVAS WRAPS IT UP!! Fernandinho produces a brilliant tackle to win the ball just outside his box, and City charge forward with five men against two defenders. Toure plays it into the path of Navas, who side-foots it first time inside Mannone's near post. Game over.
  • 89'
Dear oh dear, Steven Fletcher. Alonso heads Mannone's delivery towards Fletcher, who tries to take a touch with his right to put it on his left foot, but ends up knocking the ball on to his knee and behind for a goal kick. A real waste.
  • 88'
Sunderland deal with Nasri's inswinging free kick and set a sweeping counter going, before Fletcher is taken out by Negredo. Mannone will fire this into the box...
  • 87'
    Substitution Edin Dzeko Negredo
  • 87'
Pellegrini's men have a chance to kill a few more seconds, now, as Gardner clips Nasri's heels out by the touchline. Dzeko, meanwhile, comes off to be replaced by Negredo up front. The Bosnian certainly doesn't hurry to go off but the referee decides not to book the striker.
  • 86'
Gardner wins it well in midfield and plays forward to Fletcher, who finds Giaccherini. The substitute loses out, though, and City have a chance to come forward themselves.
  • 85'
ZABALETA!! With five minutes to go you just sense Sunderland are starting to run out of steam. Nasri and Kolarov keep the ball out on the left before playing into Toure, who drills a dangerous cross straight through the box. Zabaleta then picks it up and rifles a 25-yarder just over the bar.
  • 84'
Kompany powers a header into the Sunderland half but Ki does really well to poach the ball off Dzeko. The midfielder has had another typically solid performance in the middle this afternoon.
  • 83'
Fletcher works hard to get back and steal the ball in midfield, and Sunderland come forward in numbers as Ki plays it out to Bardsley. The full-back cuts inside and winds up a shot from 30 yards, but his left-footed effort never looks like troubling Pantilimon as it flies high and wide.
  • 82'
    Yellow Card Marcos Alonso
  • 82'
Alonso is caught out by Navas, who gets on the wrong side of the full-back and ends up being tugged back by the Sunderland man. The referee has no option but to brandish the yellow card.
  • 81'
KOMPANY!! Nasri strolls over slowly before whipping a low corner into the near post, and Kompany meets it with an outstretched leg, volleying it just wide of the goal. That would surely have wrapped things up.
  • 80'
We've got 10 minutes to go plus stoppage time at Wembley, and this one is still hanging in the balance. City can try to add a buffer now, though, as Navas charges down the right-hand side before winning a corner.
  • 79'
Borini is penalised as he works hard to chase down Kolarov and force the full-back to put it out for a throw, but the whistle goes as the striker tugs back the City man.
  • 78'
Kompany plays a wonderful pass through the gap for Zabaleta out wide, and the full-back squares to Toure, but the Ivorian's touch lets him down and Brown hammers the ball away.
  • 77'
    Substitution Lee Cattermole Emanuele Giaccherini
  • 77'
    Substitution David Silva Javi García
  • 77'
A subsitution each now, as Emanuele Giaccherini replaces the tireless Cattermole, while Javi Garcia is on for Silva. One attacking change, one defensive one. Which one will pay off?
  • 76'
Sunderland continue to press forward but Cattermole produces a loose pass, overhitting his ball out wide to Alonso and putting it straight out for a throw.
  • 75'
Dzeko does really well to keep Pantilimon's wayward clearance in play but Sunderland again work hard to get the ball back, and Alonso plays a lovely ball to the far post for the unmarked Gardner. Unfortunately for the Black Cats, though, the substitute is offside again.
  • 74'
Alonso pushes further forward down the left-hand side and does well to win a throw deep inside the City half. Bardsley slides a pass through for Gardner, but City's high line pays dividends and the flag goes up for offside.
  • 73'
Fletcher steals the ball from Kolarov and Sunderland have it back once more. Pellegrini's side have been pretty sloppy at times this afternoon.
  • 72'
FLETCHER!! Bardsley challenges Kolarov out wide and the ball loops inside into the path of Gardner, who nods into the box. Colback is there to chest it down for Fletcher, who fires a low volley straight at Pantilimon. A decent chance missed for the striker, there.
  • 71'
Inside the final 20 minutes at Wembley, and Sunderland are by no means down and out as Zabaleta fouls Alonso out on the flank. Poyet's men are seeing lots of the ball and will feel they can create some chances.
  • 70'
Toure plays a lovely ball out wide for Nasri, who lets it run out for Silva on the flank. The Spaniard squares inside to his compatriot Navas, but his touch is way too strong and the ball runs behind.
  • 69'
City come forward as Silva plays a pass into Dzeko, and the Bosnian lays off first time to Nasri, who charges towards the area but is closed down by two defenders and concedes a goal kick.
  • 68'
This is good pressure from Poyet's men, who push into the City area through Borini, and the striker plays back to Fletcher but the substitute can't quite get the bouncing ball under control and the opportunity goes away.
  • 67'
Gardner floats the ball to the far side of the area, but Navas does superbly to take it out of the path of O'Shea and put it behind. Demichelis then uses all his height and strength, holding off several Sunderland players to head Ki's delivery away.
  • 66'
Sunderland are certainly not lying down, here. They're seeing plenty of the ball and will do their utmost to get back on level terms. Cattermole continues to make a nuisance of himself and draws a foul from Fernandinho inside the City half.
  • 65'
Alonso swings the free kick in with his left foot and Pantilimon punches it straight up into the air. There are claims of handball as it bounces up and hits Toure but it looks like it hits his chest, and play carries on.
  • 64'
The Black Cats have done well to calm things down and they've weathered that storm. Fletcher collects the ball near the corner and is clipped by Demichelis, giving Sunderland another chance to get men in the box.
  • 63'
There's an opportunity for Sunderland as Zabaleta takes out Colback right on the far touchline, giving Poyet's men the chance to whip in a free kick, but Ki's delivery is too powerful and it evades everyone before going behind for a goal kick.
  • 62'
Brown is penalised for a foul in midfield and City have possession once more. The Black Cats have to be very careful not to lose their discipline and shape, or this could get a lot worse.
  • 61'
NASRI!! The City pressure continues as Silva and Kolarov link up on the left again, and the latter plays it back to Nasri, who tries to bend a spectacular shot into the top corner, but it's too high and Sunderland have some respite.
  • 60'
    Substitution Adam Johnson Craig Gardner
  • 60'
    Substitution Sebastian Larsson Steven Fletcher
  • 60'
Steven Fletcher and Craig Gardner are on for Sunderland, now, as Poyet looks for inspiration from the bench. Is there a way back into this now?
  • 59'
City have the ball again and Kolarov charges towards the penalty area, skipping past Johnson and Bardsley before going down just inside the box. The referee gives nothing, though, and awards a goal kick.
  • 58'
Substitution Sergio Agüero Jesús Navas González
  • 58'
Jesus Navas is on for City amid all that chaos as he replaces Aguero. Pellegrini's men have looked out of sorts but they're ahead through two utterly stunning goals.
  • 57'
What an absolutely stunning couple of minutes! Sunderland are utterly shellshocked. What have they got in them now?
  • 56'
    Goal Samir Nasri
NASRI PUTS CITY IN FRONT!! TWO IN AS MANY MINUTES!! Heartbreak for Sunderland as their attack breaks down and Aguero brings down Pantilimon's ball forward. It's played out for Kolarov, who fires a cross to the edge of the box and Nasri hits a wonderful shot with the outside of his right foot and just inside the post. No chance for Mannone, and City are ahead!
  • 55'
    Assist Pablo Zabaleta
  • 55'
    Goal Yaya Touré
TOURE LEVELS IT!! WHAT A GOAL!! He's been very poor by his standards so far, but he level things with an absolute stunner as he receives the ball off Zabaleta and nonchalantly swings his right foot at it, bending a stunning shot into the top-left corner from 30 yards. Incredible strike!
  • 54'
Oh dear. That's not a good routine. City take the free kick short and it's layed back to Toure, but his touch is poor and he's rapidly closed down.
  • 53'
Zabaleta and Colback both go in hard for the ball out on the flank but it's the City man who comes out on top before it's moved into Silva, who is clipped by Cattermole and Pellegrini's men have a free kick around 35 yards out...
  • 52'
Sunderland are enjoying a good spell of possession here, and it's periods like this that are vital for preserving their energy. Poyet's tactics have been spot-on so far, you have to say.
  • 51'
KI!! What an effort that is!! The Sunderland midfielder has acres of space in midfield and lines up a shot from all of 35 yards. The ball swerves and dips in the air, and Pantilimon sensibly parries it over the crossbar.
  • 50'
SILVA!! Toure spreads it out to Zabaleta on the right-hand side, and there's plenty of movement on the flank as Fernandinho and Nasri get involved. The France international flicks it into the path of Silva, who tried a left-footed effort from 20 yards which Mannone saves comfortably.
  • 49'
Borini drifts wide to collect the ball with his chest, but Kompany sticks tight to him and puts it out for a throw. Bardsley gives it to Johnson, who has two men on him and tries a fancy flick to get past, but Kolarov gets hold of the ball and clears forward.
  • 48'
Zabaleta mishits a cross which fires just over the Sunderland crossbar, prompting a few "oohs" from behind the goal, but the Black Cats have a goal kick.
  • 47'
Toure works hard to hold off challenges from both Larsson and Cattermole, and City are straight into Sunderland's half once more as they win a corner. Nasri's low outswinger comes to Demichelis, who tries a tame effort towards goal but Colback hammers it clear.
  • 46'
We're back underway in the Capital One Cup final as Sunderland get the ball rolling for the second half. No changes yet for either side.
  • Just a few minutes left until the restart, then. Will City's firepower get them back in this or can Sunderland hold on for a famous win? It's certainly going to be an exciting second half at Wembley.
  • The City boss has plenty of options at his disposal. He could bring Javi Garcia on to bolster the midfield, or he could add attacking options with either Jesus Navas or Alvaro Negredo. Will he make an immediate switch though?
  • Poyet's opposite number, however, has to rouse his troops for the second half. They're second-best to most balls at the moment and the likes of Toure, Aguero and Dzeko are looking a little frustrated.
  • Sunderland's hard work has paid real dividends this afternoon. They're pressing hard, tackling hard, and staying organised. Gus Poyet can't say much except "more of the same", really.
  • That's HALF TIME at Wembley and Sunderland go in ahead at the break thanks to Fabio Borini's early strike. It's been a fascinating first 45 minutes and we should be in for a brilliant second half, although it might be a little tense if you're a Black Cats fan.
  • 45' + 1'
City come forward in stoppage time as Fernandinho receives it on the edge of the box but is brought down by Larsson, who comes away with the ball legally, and that should be that for the half.
  • 45'
O'Shea does really well to clear a ball over the top with Aguero bearing down, but Silva picks up possession once more and gives it back to the striker, whose return pass through has too much pace and Sunderland have a goal kick.
  • 44'
The City pressure increases as the half comes to a close, and Toure sprays a wonderful ball out wide to Zabaleta, but the defender has to leap up to bring it under control and ends up being penalised for handball just inside the Sunderland box.
  • 43'
Silva spreads wide to Kolarov, who drills a low cross into the area. The ball pings off two Sunderland players but falls kindly for Cattermole, who blasts the ball clear. You need luck, and they got some there.
  • 42'
Sunderland have seen much more of the ball in the last 10 minutes and have kept City relatively quiet in front of their own goal. Dzeko, especially, hasn't had a sniff yet this afternoon.
  • 41'
City win a corner at the other and and Kompany's header drops into the path of Demichelis, who is marked tightly by Alonso. The City defender goes down but nothing is given and the Black Cats hack the ball well away from the area.
  • 40'
Pantilimon produces an authoritative punch to clear Larsson's second corner and City clear as the ball runs all the way through to Mannone. Just five minutes until the break at Wembley - can City find an equaliser?
  • 39'
Bardsley is complaining as the corner is deflected over the bar, claiming some shirt pulling, but the referee banishes the Sunderland man and waves play on.
  • 38'
WHAT A TACKLE!! Borini springs the offside trap and gets in behind Kompany. The striker sprints towards the area but the City skipper recovers brilliantly to slide in superbly and put it behind for a corner. Vital challenge, although it looked like it shouldn't have been needed as Borini was well offside.
  • 37'
Excellent work from Brown, who wins the ball and moves it towards Larsson in midfield, prompting a string of good passes as they spread the play out to Bardsley on the far side.
  • 36'
This is better from Sunderland, who have a spel of possession of their own. Toure dispossesses Alonso but Colback does brilliantly to win it back, before Alonso is penalised for a foul on Kompany seconds later.
  • 35'
City do some hard pressing of their own as Nasri and Zabaleta close down Alonso quickly, but the full-back manages to win a throw to alleviate any further pressure.
  • 34'
Sunderland avert any danger by hacking clear the third corner and Poyet's men are able to push out, forcing City to regroup and build from the back once more. You get the feeling this could be the pattern for most of the game.
  • 33'
VITAL CLEARANCE!! The first corner is diverted away and Kompany forces a second set piece. It's fired in low and Borini heads the ball behind from right under his own crossbar.
  • 32'
Danger here for Sunderland as Colback can't clear the ball and is closed down by Zabaleta on his own by-line, giving away a corner to City.
  • 31'
City are camped inside the Sunderland half, but Poyet's men look very well-organised and all the passing is in front of them so far.
  • 30'
Larsson and Cattermole both charge in to tackle Silva in midfield, echoing their work in the opening half an hour. City are getting more and more possession, though, and you suspect it's a matter of time before they fashion a good chance.
  • 29'
Slightly wayward pass from Alonso, who hammers it way past Johnson on the right wing, but as Kolarov plays back to Pantilimon three Sunderland players close the goalkeeper down and he puts it out for a throw. Johnson gets in behind Kolarov and Demichelis in the box but his squared cross is cleared.
  • 27'
NASRI!! Aguero shows real strength and pace to power past Alonso on the flank, and he charges towards the box before squaring a pass for the run of Nasri, who can't get a decent connection and his tame effort is easily caught by Mannone low to his left.
  • 26'
Toure is looking pretty frustrated as he is penalised for a foul on key, and give the ball back to Sunderland in a rather petulant manner. He's definitely not had it his own way so far today.
  • 25'
Ki plays the ball down the left to Colback, who is watched closely by Fernandinho and ends up going backwards. It's worked out to the other flank quickly, though, but Bardsley's pass beyond Kolarov for Larsson is too late and the Swede is caught offside.
  • 24'
Sunderland's midfield trio of Ki, Cattermole and Larsson are making life very difficult for Toure and Fernandinho while also sticking tight to Aguero and Dzeko. The question is whether they'll run out of steam as the game goes on.
  • 23'
Silva and Nasri are moving around fluidly in that midfield so far, and the latter tries to play a pass beyond O'Shea for Dzeko to chase, but it's way too hard and harmlessly rolls behind.
  • 22'
Johnson collects the ball by the corner flag and looks to take Kolarov on, flicking the ball past the full-back but he can't keep it in pay and City have a goal kick.
  • 21'
Dzeko drifts out to the right-hand side but is closely followed by Brown, who puts it out for a throw. The ball is worked into Aguero, who loses out to Cattermole and Sunderland come away with possession.
  • 20'
City press high inside the Sunderland half and force a rushed clearance by Mannone, who gives possession back to Pellegrini's men. It's still patient from City, who are certainly not panicking yet.
  • 19'
Alonso does well to cut out Toure's flick towards Aguero, and Cattermole picks it up but is rapidly closed down by City's Ivorian midfielder. Luckily for him the ball goes straight through to Mannone.
  • 18'
The Sunderland fans are doing the Poznan. A little bit soon perhaps, but - quite unsurprisingly - they're really enjoying themselves at the moment.
  • 17'
Johnson receives the ball on the flank but Kolarov and Silva both close him down quickly, forcing the ball out for a throw. Sunderland keep possession, though, and will be very happy with how things have gone in the opening quarter of an hour or so.
  • 16'
Toure looks for Dzeko with a slotted ball through the middle, but O'Shea is there to intercept and clear, before the Black Cats push out and force their opponents all the way back to Pantilimon. They're working incredibly hard - can they keep it up for 90 minutes though?
  • 15'
BROWN!! Larsson swings the ball out towards the penalty spot and Brown leaps high, but can't direct his header on target as it flies just high and wide of the target.
  • 14'
Sunderland break quickly, throwing plenty of numbers forward and Alonso darts down the left before looking for Borini with a whipped cross. Demichelis watches it well, though, and heads behind for a corner. It comes to Borini on the edge of the box but his volley deflects well over off Dzeko.
  • 13'
Silva plays the ball wide to Zabaleta, who fires in an early cross towards the far post, but Bardsley is there to turn it behind for a corner which is easily cleared.
  • 12'
City have had the majority of the possession so far, and that hasn't changed. Most of the play is inside Sunderland's half, and there's a long way to go for Poyet's men to hold on.
  • 11'
It's a dream opening for the underdogs. There's a long way to go in this one, though.
  • 10'
    Assist Adam Johnson
  • 10'
    Goal Fabio Borini
BORINI OPENS THE SCORING!! What a start!! Johnson floats a ball over the top and Borini darts beyond Kompany and Demichelis, holding off the City captain before showing superb compusre to divert the ball past Pantilimon with the outside of his right foot. A wonderful finish!
  • 9'
AGUERO!! Kolarov finds the striker with a lovely angled ball to the edge of the area. Aguero uses his strength to hold off a challenge before firing a dangerous low shot from 25 yards, but Mannone gets down well to parry his effort away.
  • 8'
Toure is caught out as Cattermole nips in to steal the ball and set a swift counter going. Borini darts to the corner before laying back to Johnson, who slides a pass back through for the striker, but the flag goes up for offside. Poyet's men had plenty of numbers forward there, so that's a missed opportunity.
  • 7'
Pellegrini's men have done well to calm things down and stifle Sunderland's early adrenaline. They're passing it in front of the opposition, biding their time at the moment.
  • 6'
Brown does well to get ahead of Kompany to divert the corner away. Silva's second delivery causes problems in the box but Sunderland eventually scramble it clear as Demichelis can't get a proper contact on the ball.
  • 5'
Demichelis spreads wide to Kolarov, and the defender links up well with Silva on the flank before firing a cross towards the box, but Bardsley gets a touch to divert it behind for a corner.
  • 4'
Brown's long ball forward is headed back by Kompany, but Ki tidies up well in midfield, going back to his defender before Mannone hammers it forward, firing it straight through to Pantilimon at the other end.
  • 3'
We've already got some full-blooded challenges flying in as Bardsley takes out Silva before Cattermole and Larsson both close down Toure quickly. I doubt it'll be long before we see a yellow card this afternoon.
  • 2'
City start confidently, pinning Sunderland back into their own half, but Dzeko's return pass to Kolarov on the flank doesn't quite come off, and the ball goes out for a throw to the Black Cats before Silva is penalised for a foul on Ki in midfield.
  • 1'
We're underway! Manchester City get the 2014 Capital One Cup final started at Wembley, and will attack towards the Sunderland fans in the first half.
  • Handshakes are made after the national anthem is belted around the stadium. Just a couple of minutes to go until kick-off in the 54th League Cup final.
  • The players march out of the tunnel to a huge roar. Wembley is absolutely rocking this afternoon, but which end will be singing loudly in around two hours' time?
  • Sunderland have won seven of their last 11 matches in all competitions and have really turned their fortunes around. One man who is key to their success today is Adam Johnson. The winger has been on an incredible run of form today and the Black Cats will be hoping he can win the battle with Aleksandar Kolarov this afternoon.
  • That said, Pellegrini's side have failed to score in three of their last five games in all competitions, so could Sunderland get an improbable clean sheet? A certain diminutive striker will have something to say about that on his return. In their previous five games with Aguero playing, City scored 20 goals. Ominous.
  • City are clear favourites at Wembley today, though. They've only conceded once in this tournament so far, scoring 19 goals in their five games. Dzeko has netted in every round of the competition this season and is joint top-scorer with team-mate Alvaro Negredo on six goals.
  • Phil Bardsley scored the solitary goal in the last meeting between these two, when the Wearsiders bagged a shock 1-0 Premier League win over Pellegrini's men back in November. Poyet will undoubtedly be drawing on the experience of that victory in his team talk today, as they look for their first piece of silverware in 41 years.
  • Sunderland make three changes from their 4-1 defeat at Arsenal last weekend with Wes Brown, Lee Cattermole and Seb Larsson all drafted into the starting XI. Fabio Borini is the lone striker tasked with troubling the City defence this afternoon as Poyet decides not to risk Stephen Fletcher from the off.
  • As expected, Pellegrini goes with Costel Pantilimon in goal as the lofty shot-stopper has played in all but one of City's League Cup outings this season. Meanwhile, Sergio Aguero makes his return from injury, starting alongside Edin Dzeko up front.
  • Sunderland subs: Ustari, Gardner, Fletcher, Celustka, Giaccherini, Vergini, Scocco.
  • Sunderland (4-2-3-1): Mannone; Bardsley, O'Shea, Brown, Alonso; Cattermole, Larsson; Johnson, Ki, Colback; Borini.
  • Manchester City subs: Hart, Clichy, Lescott, Milner, Garcia, Navas, Negredo.
  • Manchester City (4-4-2): Pantilimon; Zabaleta, Kompany, Demichelis, Kolarov; Nasri, Toure, Fernandinho, Silva; Aguero, Dzeko.
  • The teams have been announced so let's take a look at the line-ups, starting with the men in sky blue...
  • City's last visit here saw them lose to underdogs Wigan in the FA Cup final with a last-gasp goal. Can Gus Poyet's side upset the odds this afternoon, or will Manuel Pellegrini pick up his first trophy and keep City's quadruple bid alive?
  • Good afternoon and welcome to LIVE coverage of the Capital One Cup final at Wembley as Manchester City face Sunderland, with the first trophy of the season up for grabs.
