The Spaniard had a very quiet night in the Liverpool goal. Could do nothing about Liverpool's opener, which deflected in off Agger.
The right-back coped well defensively and looked to bomb forward when he could. Linked up reasonably well with Downing but didn't deliver any quality crosses into the box.
The Slovakian was dominant in the air against Demba Ba and was often able to bully the Newcastle striker off the ball. Briliant clearance off the line in the second-half to deny Ba an equaliser.
The Dane was unfortunate in the 25th minute when the ball struck his arm and deflected into the net for Newcastle's opener. Very comfortable on the ball and showed good defensive awareness, although he did let Demba Ba in on one occasion.
A strong performance against his old club. Untroubled defensively by Obertan and showed quality when he attacked.
Kept running with energy and was not afraid to get on the ball. Seemed to lack ideas in the final third but played a clever pass to Gerrard for the Liverpool captain's goal.
He's not at the same level as Lucas, but provided a strong defensive shield at the base of the midfield and started attacks with precise passes.
On the periphery for much of the game as he looked to cut inside on to his favoured left-foot. Produced few crosses for Carroll but provided balance.
Played his part in Bellamy's first goal with a drop of the shoulder and right-footed cross. Never had much of an influence on the game, reflected as he was replaced by Gerrard in the 59th minute.
The brightest spark in the Liverpool side throughout the game and it was no surprise that the Welshman made it 1-1 with a drilled effort in the 30th minute before putting the Red ahead with a free-kick on 67 minutes.
The £35m looked short of confidence and barely threatened against his former club. Worked hard but his touch let him down, particularly when he tried to latch onto a pass from Gerrard. Improved when the Liverpool captain was on the pitch and hit the bar with a powerful header.
Could do nothing about any of Liverpool's goals and looked comfortable when called upon.
Started well but looked shaky when Bellamy and Gerrard ran at him. Strong in the air for most of the game but was beaten by Carroll as the former Newcastle man hit the bar.
Solid for most of the game but made a hash of his attempt to clear Bellamy's free-kick for Liverpool's second goal as the ball squirmed off his head and into the net.
The Newcastle captain led by example at the heart of the visitors defence. Good anticipation to make interceptions and recover the ball while he covered well behind Williamson when needed.
The full-back played a key role in Newcastle's opener with a vicious inswinging cross into the penalty area. Struggled defensively, however, and picked up a booking in the first-half for a challenge on Johnson. Replaced at half-time, presumably as Alan Pardew feared he might get sent-off for a second yellow card.
The Ivorian provided excellent protection for the back four in an organised defensive performance. Good positioning, full commitment to tackles and tidy use of the ball.
Worked tirelessly on Newcastle's left flank but showed little quality on the ball.
The winger's pace was a threat on the counter-attack but he didn't have much support from team-mates, particularly in the first-half. Faded after the break and was replaced by Sammy Ameobi in the 84th minute.
The 19-year-old Slovenian was handed a surprise start and looked slightly overwhelmed as he found it difficult to get on the ball. Did grow in confidence after the break, demanding the ball and showing some classy touches before being replaced by Ben Arfa in the 65th minute.
Helped the ball towards goal and will try to claim the credit for Newcastle's opener, which found the net via Agger. Played some neat passes - particularly one second-half pass to Ba - but could easily have been sent-off for a nasty studs-up challenge on Spearing shortly after the restart.
Newcastle's top scorer was isolated for much of the game but was constantly on the move hoping for a sniff of a chance. Nearly equalised in the second-half but saw his clipped effort cleared off the line by Skrtel.

Reminded the Liverpool fans of exactly what they have been missing with an inspirational display after replacing Adam in the 59th minute. Played some gorgeous passes for Carroll before he sealed the win with a trademark run into the box and a low shot past Krul.
- 11 M. Rodríguez
Replaced the injured Bellamy in the 74th minute and occupied a role on the left side of the front three. Put Newcastle players under pressure.
