LA Galaxy 1-1 Tottenham: All even as Keane faces former teammates

LA Galaxy 1-1 Tottenham: All even as Keane faces former teammates

The Galaxy held on to an impressive draw against Tottenham despite the absence of David Beckham and Landon Donovan.

CARSON, Calif. - The LA Galaxy scrapped and held a strong Tottenham team to a 1-1 draw in a preseason friendly at the Home Depot Center.

Before the match Andre Villas-Boas said that Rafael van der Vaart and Gylfi Sigurdsson were competing for the role behind the striker. The Icelandic international slotted into a deeper role to start the match, but that didn't impede him. It was his cross which Gareth Bale headed home for the opener.

Sigurdsson quickly moved into the hole behind Jermain Defoe when van der Vaart limped out of the match in the first half and was replaced by Jermaine Jenas.

By then the Galaxy had equalized. The Spurs back line pushed forward after a corner and a clever Marcelo Sarvas chip caught it out. Hector Jimenez slid the ball back into the middle for David Junior Lopes to smash in for his first Galaxy goal.

Robbie Keane squandered two breakaways to score against his former club. He didn't get any more chances after the half, making way in a flurry of substitutions.

The Spurs squad remained relatively intact, with AVB wanting to push his players' fitness early in preseason. Jermain Defoe continued up top and 10 minutes into the half pushed a shot a foot wide of the post when isolated with Gonzalez.

Bale thought he had earned a penalty a handful of minutes later when Brian Rowe tripped him in the box, but the referee confusingly gave a goal kick instead. Bale then carved out an open shot with a low cross only for Sigurdsson to shank it wide.

One more penalty appeal and a half-volley were the best chances left for the 25,676 in attendance to see.
