Did not have a lot to deal with in terms of shot-stopping but showed it truly was a captain's performance today. Time and time again he took the pressure off his side with clearing punches and commanding catches. Never looked like getting beat today.
Was always right in the face of the Valencia attackers whenever they were in possession in and around the penalty area and did not allow them any time on the ball to operate. Ending up having a solid game, but he was not up against much.
Would have been forgiven for thinking he was in for a tough day against Pablo and then Feghouli on the right-hand side but dealt with them without a swear for 90 minutes. Did not allow them to cut inside or get any crosses in at the byline.
Made a few superb blocks on the edge of the box as Valencia resorted to long shots to try and find a goal. Established a good partnership with Rodriguez and kept Jonas and Aduriz very quiet during their time on the park.
Was always industrious in the centre of midfield and ran a marathon for his side today. Passing was sharp and incisive which helped stifle Valencia's ability to gain possession. Should have grabbed a goal in the dying minutes but dragged a shot wide from 12 yards.
Played just off Uche in the hole and was not marshalled at all well by Tino Costa and Mehmet Topal. Excelled with the room he was given and effortlessly picked out passes in the final third. Scored the second goal with a fantastic left-footed curler from the edge of the box.
Was up against a usually formidable duo of Alba and Mathieu but dealt with them excellently and did not award them too much room on the overlap. Was unlucky not to score in the first half when he cut inside and curled a shot towards the top corner only to miss by a whisker.
Got the ball rolling for Espanyol with a late run into the box and composed finish to make it 1-0 for the hosts. Ran the midfield with Baena and was always eager to get forward and join any counterattacks.
Man of the match. Covered every blade of grass on the pitch and caused Valencia so much problems with his sharp runs with and without the ball. Topped off his performance with two superb assists and his never-say-die attitude deserved a goal as well as a victory for his side.
Always looked sharp and bright when in possession and caused Valencia problems with his movement on the wing. Came very close to grabbing a goal when he lashed a strike just past the left-hand post in the first half. Substituted ten minutes in to the second half.
Was always buzzing around in the final third and put the Valencia defenders under relentless pressure with his pressing. Scored the cherry on top of the Espanyol performance with a neat finish in the last ten minutes to make it 3-0.
A shaky performance that would not inspire confidence in his defenders or his manager. Erratically ran from his line on a few occasions and gifted Espanyol a third goal when his weak pass from the back allowed Sergio Garcia to steal possession and set up Alvaro.
Had a fairly decent game at right-back against Real Madrid and perhaps he should stay there. Communication with his other defenders was non-existent and allowed the Espanyol attackers far too much room to create play.
Is usually a real danger down the left-hand side but today he looked tired and unable to get the better of Javi Lopez at right-back for Espanyol. His cohesion with Alba on the wing was not at it's best and failed to get to the byline and get decent service into the box.
Actually had a relatively solid game at right-back and defended much better than his team-mates in the defensive line. Was up against Weiss for most of the match and although the tricky winger got the better of him on a couple of occasions, he was generally dependable.
Was dominant aerially against Uche and the other attackers but his positioning was criminal at times at the back. Attempted to play offside at the wrong time and backed off at the wrong time. Inexplicably stepped out of defence which allowed Uche to drift in and score the fourth goal.
Showed bags of desire and gusto throughout the match but the quality of his play did not match up with his determination. Failed to get beyond Mathieu on the overlap and really struggled to deal with an on-form Sergio Garcia on the wing.
Failed to link up play between defence and midfield and also failed to establish any kind of meaningful connection with Jonas up front. Did not see as much of the ball as he should have and his ability to affect the game was hampered due to defensive duties.
Did not get on the ball enough and this hampered Valencia's ability to create moves from midfield. Spent too much time in defensive positions which meant that the attackers had to come deep to try and get some possession. Failed in his deep playmaker role.
Hardly saw any of the ball during his time on the park and when he did he did not look likely at all to make something happen for his side. Was not given any change from Didac on the wing and was basically a passenger for his side.
Was a hero in midfield against Real Madrid with his industrious display in midfield but today he was overrun and outclassed by a talented Espanyol midfield. Failed to keep a tight leash on Verdu which allowed him to play in the hole and create play at will.
Did not pose any danger whatsoever to the Espanyol defence during his time on the pitch. Was stuck up front by himself and looked completely isolated. Would have benefited from coming deep to receive possession in the hole, where he is at his most dangerous.
- 13 Kiko Casilla
- 5 Jordi Amat
- 11 C. Romaric
Picked out Uche with a defence-splitting pass to help Espanyol grab their fourth goal of the match.
Scored with basically his first touch of the match after latching on to Sergio Garcia's pass to score into an empty net. Arguably should have had a penalty after a challenge from Canales.
- 20 W. Pandiani
- 1 Diego Alves
- 18 Víctor Ruíz
Did not fair much better than Pablo did on the right-hand side. Cut inside more often than not and played a simple pass across the park.
Was lucky not to give away a penalty on Alvaro shortly after his introduction which was his only moment of note in the match.
- 3 H. Maduro
- 6 Albelda
Was introduced at half-time but failed to put himself about in the box and give the Espanyol defence any problems.
