FULL-TIME. ENGLAND 0-0 MONTENEGRO. Not what England supporters would have expected. The Three Lions failed to create too many chances and the game's best opportunity went to Montenegro late on when Jovanovic struck the crossbar. Much to ponder for Fabio Capello as his side failed to score for the first time at the new Wembley. Thanks for joining Goal.com tonight, and be sure to stick around for all the post-match reaction.
Three minutes of added on time at Wembley...
Yellow CardSimon Vukcevic
Shaun Wright-Phillips is brought down by a late challenge from Savic, who is lucky not to pick up his second booking. Gerrard's inviting cross into the six-yard box is gathered by the goalkeeper, who earns a free-kick fafter being caught by Davies. Moments later, Barry is presented with a chance inside the area but can only fire his right-footed half-volley into the arms of Bozovic. The goalkeeper parries the ball to his right before winning a free-kick after being caught by Barry who tries to reach the follow up.
Davies picks up a booking for England. The forward attempt to hold off the challenge of Dzudovic 25 yards out but inadvertently catches the defender's mouth with his arm. Dzudovic makes a meal of it but eventually returns to the action.
JOVANOVIC RATTLES THE CROSSBAR!! The ball falls kindly to the Montenegro defender 25 yards out and, after using his chest to set himself up, he fires the ball left-footed towards goal. His looping effort has Joe Hart beat and flies over the goalkeeper before crashing off the crossbar and coming back into play. A huge let off there for England.
Yellow CardKevin Davies
Beciraj does come on for the visitors, replacing captain Boskovic.
Montenegro look set to make their final change, with Fatos Beciraj warming up on the touchline. England have one change left and could opt for Wilshere or Downing if Capello makes a late alteration.
HANDBALL BY JOVANOVIC!! PENALTY!?! NO!! A cross comes in towards the far post from the England left. Jovanovic has nobody around him and clearly brings the ball down with his left arm. German referee Manuel Grafe doesn't give it though, and and play continues. There are roars around the stadium for a penalty and appeals from England players, but Grafe waves away the protests.
Another change for Montenegro. Djalovic makes way for Delibasic. Meanwhile, the other match in Group G is over and Group G rivals Switzerland have beaten Wales 4-1 in Basel.
Second change of the night for England. Ashley Young makes way after an indifferent display, with Shaun Wright-Phillips coming on in his place.
GREAT SAVE FROM BOZOVIC! Davies wins the ball in the air and nods it down to Rooney on the edge of the area. After a ricochet off a defender, the Red Devils star fires towards the bottom left-hand corner, but Bozovic is there with a strong hand to turn the ball away. Gerrard eventually receives possession on the edge of the area but can only see his weak effort squirm into the arms of the goalkeeper again.
Davies tries to make an immediate impact, breaking forward down the right wing before curling a right-footed cross into the area. Ashley Young fails to meet it and Rooney can't get there either, but a decent ball in from the forward.
There is that change. Big Kevin Davies is on for his England debut - the oldest England debutant since Leslie Compton in 1950 - in the place of Peter Crouch.
Kevin Davies could be seen as an option for England should Fabio Capello decide to alter things. The Three Lions have scored in every home game since the new Wembley opened in 2007, but that could tonight..
ANOTHER booking... Kascelan is yellow carded just a couple of minutes after his arrival for a late challenge on Ashley Young, who is now off the pitch changing his boots...
Yellow card for Barry. The midfielder picks up a booking after an inadvertent clash of heads. Montenegro then make their first change by bringing on Kascelan for Novakovic.
Yellow CardMladen Kascelan
Yellow CardGareth Barry
Ashley Young booked for simulation... The winger cuts inside from the left into the penalty area and looks to have won a penalty after going down under the challenge of Savic. However, the referee begs to differ and hands the Aston Villa man a yellow card. It was a poor dive from Young really, he was already going to ground when he was caught, and he was only caught because he ran into his opponent.
ROONEY FROM CLOSE RANGE!! Gerrard plays a superb pass from 35 yards towards Rooney just inside the penalty area. The Manchester United man looks to slide the ball underneath the body of the onrushing goalkeeper but the Montenegro stopper manages to get in the way of it. Crouch tries to convert the follow up but kicks the hands of the goalkeeper, giving away a free-kick.
Yellow CardAshley Young
Rooney drifts a crossfield ball into the chest of Crouch from inside his own area. Crouch, 30 yards out, gives away possession easily and Montenegro clear. England then set another attack going and Ashley Young looks to skip past Basa. The Villa star hurdles the reckless sliding challenge of the left-back to avoid getting injured, prompting the referee to book Basa for his poorly-timed tackle.
Yellow CardMarko Basa
Yellow card for Rooney. Zverotic breaks forward through the centre of the pitch and bears down on the England area after Gareth Barry gives away the ball in midfield. Rooney does well to race back to try and win back possession but catches the heel of the Montenegro midfielder with a late challenge from behind.
Ashley Cole, going level with Kenny Sansom as England's most capped full-back tonight, is brought to ground after a strong challenge from Savic, who earns a booking. Ashley Young takes the resulting free-kick from 30 yards out but fails to pick out a man in the centre.
Yellow CardWayne Rooney
Yellow CardStefan Savic
Gerrard is lacking in support on the right wing and his only option is to beat his man and cross into the area - he does just that. The skipper turns well past his markes and drives a fierce cross across the six-yard line, but there are no white shirts around, leaving Montenegro to easily clear the danger.
Rooney picks up the ball 30 yards out and looks as though he may pass to Glen Johnson out on the right wing, but instead opts to go it alone, taking a touch forward before firing right-footed towards goal. However, his effort flies wide of the top right-hand corner.
Ashley Young earns a free-kick just into the Montenegro half on the left. He takes the resulting set-piece, but his deep inswinging delivery can't find Crouch. Moments later, the ball arrives at the feet of Young again on the left and he finds Crouch this time, only for the striker to be penalised for climbing on Jovanovic.
Montenegro kick us off for the second half. No changes for either side at the break.
45' + 1'
HALF-TIME. ENGLAND 0-0 MONTENEGRO. A few groans from England supporters as the referee blows for half-time. It certainly hasn't been a brilliant first half, with Adam Johnson's free-kick and a couple of Peter Crouch chances the closest the hosts have come, but Joe Hart hasn't been tested once. England have been the better team and you would still expect them to be on top in the second half and win the game.
45' + 1'
Half-chance of the stroke of half-time. Gerrard finds Glen Johnson on the right side of the Montenegro area, and he eventually picks out Rooney to his left just inside the box. The striker turns well but can only fire a weak shot into the arms of the goalkeeper.
One minute of added time at Wembley...
Milan Jovanovic brushes Glen Johnson as the right-back looks to skip past him but referee Manuel Grafe is having none of it. Moments later when the ball is out of play Wayne Rooney continues the appeal that England should have a free-kick but, once again, the matter is waved away.
Not many chances late on in this first half. Rooney attempts to find Crouch in the area twice but fails to pick him out on either occassion, while Vukcevic runs the ball out of play down the Montenegro right wing.
Slack pass from Gareth Barry. Crouch drops deep to help out with a string of England passes and the ball is eventually played to Barry on the halfway line. However, his ambitious ball forward is poor and runs through to the Montenegro goalkeeper.
England have a spell of possession and Hart finds Ferdinand in plenty of space in his own half. The skipper picks out Glen Johnson down the right, but the full-back gets a little bit to clever and allows the ball to run through his legs... and out of play.
There's a brief break in play as Montenegro midfielder Pekovic is down for a moment, but he's returned to the action and looks fine to continue.
ADAM JOHNSON CURLS HIS FREE-KICK WIDE! Crouch earns a free-kick 30 yards out after being climbed all over by Basa. Gerrard and Adam Johnson stand over it, and the latter is given the chance to make it three goals in three games for his country. He curls the ball left-footed over the Montenegro wall and inches wide of the top right-hand corner. Great effort from the flying winger.
Stat of the day: England have won all five of their matches on October 12... Not winning yet, but they do look the more likely of the two teams, as Adam Johnson breaks away down the right again before having his low cross cleared at the near post.
Johnson looks a threat down the right for England. He's not been given the ball enough in the opening stages but does look lively in possession. He checks inside from the right onto his left foot again but it quickly closed down by a number of Montenegro players and wins a free-kick, which comes to nothing.
Ashley Young skips forward down the left, cuts inside brilliantly past two defenders before attempting to break into the penalty area. However, he is robustly brought to ground by Dzudovic, who also receives a booking. Young, from the edge of the box, looks set to trouble the 'keeper but curls the ball well wide of the far post.
Ashley Cole gets forward down the left and drives a left-footed cross into the area looking for Crouch. It's a little too inaccurate and rolls into the arms of the goalkeeper. Bozovic can only parry the ball out in front of him but manages to retrieve it before Crouch can pounce.
Yellow CardMiodrag Djudovic
Rooney tries to impose himself on the game by dribbling through the centre of the pitch around 35 yards out. If he beats him man he has a great opportunity to either have a pop at goal or create for a team-mate, but Jovanovic prevents him having the choice with an inch-perfect tackle to dispossess the Manchester United man.
A ball is played into the area looking for Crouch at the far post. The big man tries to reach it ahead of Bozovic to steer the ball back into the danger zone, but the Montenegro gets there before him to parry it away. Should Crouch have won it, there was nobody in the area in any case.
Interesting comments from Fabio Capello before the game. The Italian insisted that John Terry and Rio Ferdinand were his first choice centre-back pairing. What will the likes of Joleon Lescott, Phil Jagielka, Michael Dawson and Gary Cahill think of that!?
CROUCH HEADS OVER!! The Tottenham striker wins a free-kick 35 yards out after receiving a push from Dzudovic. Gerrard opts to pass rather than cross into the area and finds Johnson on the right side of the Montenegro box. The Liverpool full-back then whips a right-footed cross into the area and Crouch wins the aerial challenge, but can only direct his header over the bar.
Gerrard, playing in a very deep role so far in this game, curls a wonderful pass with the outside of his right foot over the Montenegro defence from the halfway line towards the onrushing Ashley Young. However, the Aston Villa star can't latch onto it as Bozovic rushes out to the edge of his area to claim possession. Great ball from Gerrard.
Good work from Adam Johnson. The Manchester City man looks as though he is about to cuts inside onto his favoured left foot from the right, but instead opts to go down the line. He then loses possession, but only for a second and promptly wins it back before winning a corner off Basa. However, the corner comes to nothing.
Just a minute after Ashley Cole forrays forward to allow Ashley Young to cut inside from the left and fire over, Montenegro produce what is likely to be a rare chance in this game. Boskovic receives a pass around 40 yards out from goal and dribbles forward before firing wide of Hart's left-hand post. Nobody closed him down, but they didn't need to - he never stood a chance from there.
Jovanovic looks to set an attack going from just inside his own half and lays the ball off to Pekovic. The central midfielder drives forward an attempts to skip past Ferdinand, but he is promptly stopped in his tracks by a thunderous tackle from the England skipper, who fails to win the ball and brings his man down. Pekovic stays down initially before returning to the action.
Gerrard fires the ball into the feet of Crouch again from the halfway line, but the Tottenham forward, around 30 yards out from goal, reacts slowly to the pass and his first touch lets him down, allowing Montenegro to clear the danger.
Early possession is with England. Gerrard, Barry and Adam Johnson are seeing a lot of the ball in the centre of midfield, with the latter always looking to drift inside and get involved.
CROUCH GOES CLOSE!! Gerrard pings a superb 45-yard pass forward from the halfway line towards Rooney on the edge of the area. The Manchester United man fails to connect with the ball and it runs through to Crouch in the box. However, the striker can't quite steer the ball towards goal and, after beating the offside trap, can only manage to poke it wide of the bottom left-hand corner.
England get us underway at Wembley.
Mirko Vucinic would have been England’s main threat but he misses out with a hamstring injury for Montenegro, who surprisingly top group G after three games. The minnows have won each of their games 1-0 and lead by three points, but an England win tonight would see Fabio Capello’s men keep up their 100 per cent record and top the table.
No Phil Jagielka, John Terry, Aaron Lennon or Darren Bent for England. The quartet have pulled out through injury which means the likes of Joleon Lescott and Ashley Young have been given their chance to impress. Youngster Jack Wilshere has to settle for a place on the bench alongside 33-year-old Kevin Davies, who will become the oldest player to make his England debut for 50 years if he comes on.
Montenegro line up: Bozovic; Savic, Dzudovic, Jovanovic, Basa; Vukcevic, Zverotic, Pekovic, Novakovic; Boskovic, Djalovic. Subs: Blazic, Batak, Kascelan, Beciraj, Tomasevic, Pejovic, Delibasic.
Straight to the team news. England line up: Hart; G Johnson, Ferdinand, Lescott, A Cole; A Johnson, Gerrard, Barry, Young; Crouch, Rooney. Subs: Foster, Warnock, Cahill, Wright-Phillips, Wilshere, Downing, Davies.
