Dempo SC 1-2 United Sports Club: Whites gutted at home

Eric Brown is ecstatic after his performance today

United SC showed tremendous resolve as Eric Brown guarantees all three points for the Kolkata club...

When Dempo Sports Club and United Sports Club took to the field today, either club were trying to further their ambitions by getting out of the mid-table rut they had gotten themselves into. However, there was only going to be one winner and in this case it was to be United SC who have Eric Brown to thank for his double that helped elevate the Kolkata boys over the Whites of Dempo.

The game started with Dempo and United SC going at it each other with the away team dominating proceedings. Eric Brown split open the home teams’ backline in the eleventh minute but CK Vineeth’s  subsequent cross asked too much of his strikers. A speculative effort from Bello Rasaq some 30 yards out forced Subhasish Chowdhary into making a save.

A decisive chance for Dempo was then wasted as Beto, who was fouled by Bello on the edge of the box, couldn’t lift his effort over the wall.

Then came some fantastic all round play from the Whites as Alwyn George found Debabrata Roy but the latter’s cross was cut out by Anupam Sarkar before Jeje Lalpekhlua could get to it. Another bout of good play between Beto and Pronay Halder saw them tee up Clifford Miranda who skied his effort.

Peter Carvalho was the first booking of the match as chaos ensued in the away team’s box. Alwyn and Jeje were unable to scramble the ball past the goal-line.

The best chance of the half went Dempo’s way as Jeje put it on a plate for Alwyn, but he somehow missed the target with only the keeper between him and the goal. Another chance went a begging as Jeje missed the target from close quarters.

The second half delivered the goods as United SC took the lead through Eric Brown. The Liberian bulged the nylons with a blistering free-kick from 30 yards, which was an absolute stunner, in the 50th minute. He then doubled his side’s lead in the 55th after a costly defensive error from Shinnosuke Honda.

Stung, Dempo fought back and equalized five minutes later as Clifford nestled his header from a corner taken by Beto. United SC then sat back and absorbed the pressure which saw them survive chances from Holicharan Narzary, who drilled wide and Simon Colosimo, the Dempo defender, who forced the United SC custodian into making a good save.

Tempers started to flare as Billy Mehmet’s curler forced Ishan Debnath into a full stretched save.  Eric's shot from the edge of the six-yard box took a deflection but Subhasish managed to push it for a corner. Ranti Martins, the ex-Dempo striker, had his first real impact on the game as his deft touch forced the goalkeeper into a stuning save.

That’s how the game ended as United SC savoured the win and Dempo could only reflect on what could have been had they converted the chances that came their way in the first half.
