Ranti Martins scored on his return to his old stomping ground, but goals from Sueoka, Carvalho and Lawrence ensured that there was no happy ending to the day for the Nigerian...

Dempo SC beat Prayag United SC 3-1 in a round 10 I-League match played at the Fatorda stadium in Goa, on Saturday evening.

Prayag United striker Ranti Martins broke the deadlock in the 21st minute, while Ryuji Sueoka scored the equaliser in the 36th minute. Peter Carvalho (76') and Climax Lawrence (78') found the back of the net in the second half, to complete Dempo's tally of three goals.

Armando Colaco fielded Rohan Ricketts and Ryuji Sueoka as the two frontmen, with Koko Sakibo and Joaquim Abranches named on the bench, while the midfield duties were put in the hands of Climax Lawrence again.

Eelco Schattorie's lineup featured former Dempo player Ranti Martins upfront along-side former Costa Rican World Cupper Carlos Hernandez with Vineeth CK for support.

The away side began with three corners in the opening two minutes, while Ranti Martins got a touch at the near post on two occasions.

In the 16th minutes, Rohan Ricketts' shot was deflected wide by United SC defender Dhanachandra Singh, after the Dempo man was fed by Sueoka.

Five minutes later, it was Ranti Martins who bagged the opening goal for the visitors as he took advantage of a defensive lapse to tap in a long cross by Gouramangi Moirangthem.

Dempo defender Rowilson Rodrigues then saw his directed header miss the target by not much from Clifford Miranda's cross in the 32nd minute.

Sueoka eventually found the target in the 36th minute when the Japanese headed in the equaliser for Dempo from a Clifford Miranda free-kick, which was won by Joaquim Abranches five minutes after coming on in place of Romeo Fernandes.

Just before the half-time whistle, Sueoka missed a golden chance to double his side's lead while trying to direct Abranches' flag kick from the right towards goal, after United SC keeper Subrata Paul had misjudged the flight.

Minutes earlier, Dhanachandra Singh did well to intercept Peter Carvalho's pass to Ryuji Sueoka who was on his way towards the Prayag United goal.

Dempo won a penalty in the 54th minute when Sueoka was brought down in the area by Bello Rasaq after being released by Debabrata Roy. Prayag United keeper Subrata Paul however pulled off a save from the spot kick to deny the home side the lead.

Carlos Hernandez powered in a couple of powerful pile-drivers soon after, which unsettled the Dempo keeper a bit, as Roychowdhury took two attempts to get hold of the ball on both occasions.

Then Joaquim Abranches' cross created all sorts of problems for the United SC defenders in the 65th minute giving Peter Carvalho a chance to score in the 65th minute, after the latter was set-up by Sueoka in the Prayag United box, but the former's shot was despairingly wide.

However Carvalho made no mistake as he latched on to a beautiful pass by Ricketts to give Dempo the lead for the first time, in the 76th minute.

Two minutes later, Climax Lawrence more or less assured Dempo of the three points, as he got the better of a one-on-one situation with United SC goalkeeper Subrata Paul. Ricketts was once again the provider as the score read 3-1 in favour of Dempo.

Eventually the referee blew the final whistle, to bring United SC's misery to an end.

The result meant that Dempo have opened up a four point lead over East Bengal, who play bitter rivals Mohun Bagan on Sunday, while Eelco Schattorie's side are now fourth, a distant 11 points away from the Goans.
