The Goan giants continued their good form from the Federation Cup as they moved up five places in the standings...

Dempo SC defeated Rangdajied United FC 2-0 in a round 17 I-League clash that was held at the Tilak Maidan stadium in Vasco, Goa, on Saturday. Alwyn George (7') and Haroon Amiri (44') were the scorers on the evening.

Arthur Papas started with the same first eleven that featured against Sporting Clube de Goa in the semi-finals of the Federation Cup.

Meanwhile, Santosh Kashyap was without the services of injured Edmar Figueira who is on his way out of the club while the away team's coach made four changes to his starting line-up from the loss to Churchill Brothers on Tuesday.

The opener was scored in the seventh minute as Alwyn George tapped in the rebound after Clifford Miranda's firm shot crashed against the upright.

Five minutes later, the visiting side's skipper Eugeneson Lyngdoh tested Dempo goalkeeper Laxmikant Kattimani who dived low to his left to keep the ball from entering his net.

Beto's shot from the edge of the box was blocked by Rehenesh who also did well to tip away Tolgay Ozbey's attempt from inside the area after the Australian received a pass from Miranda. The loose ball was eventually cleared by Munmun Lugun.

That was before T. Lalnunpuia's shot from a Steven Dias cross deflected wide in the 35th minute and at the other end, Ozbey's diving header off Miranda's delivery was blocked by Rehenesh in the following minute.

Ozbey was then denied by the woodwork in the 41st minute after the Dempo striker received a pass from Peter Carvalho until Haroon Amiri doubled his side's lead a minute before half-time, volleying home after a goalmouth meelee from Beto's corner-kick.

Lyngdoh fired the first warning shot five minutes into the second half which fell straight to Kattimani while Rangdajied substitute Kim Yong's cross for Steven was intercepted by the Dempo custodian in the 68th minute.

Kattimani stood in the way of a shot by Iwasaki and a header by Yong, while the latter headed wide in another opportunity that fell to him in the 78th minute.

Ozbey had a good chance of scoring in the 83rd minute, but his first touch let him down after being played in by Beto. Peter Carvalho then directed Dempo substitute Romeo Fernandes' cross towards goal but his effort wasn't good enough to beat Rehenesh for the third time.

With this win, Dempo move from 10th to 5th position with 19 points from 16 matches while Rangdajied United stay rooted to the bottom with 12 points but have played one match less than Papas' side.
