Dempo SC 1-1 Mumbai FC: Alfred's late strike rescues a point

Khalid Jamil's side have twice picked up a point against the Goan outfit with a late equaliser...

Mumbai FC managed to find a late equalizer as Alfred Jaryan's goal cancelled out Roberto Mendes da Silva's first half strike in a round 24 I-League clash at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Goa.

Arthur Papas made two changes to his side following their 4-1 victory against Churchill Brothers. Prabir Das and Pronay Halder made way for Roberto Mendes da Silva and Haroon Amiri respectively.

Khalid Jamil preferred to stick to the winning combination as he named an unchanged line up from the one which started against Shillong Lajong.

Mumbai FC were hit with an injury concern in the 16th minute as N.P Pradeep had to be substituted for Climax Lawrence.

The first clear chance of the game fell to the away side midway into the first half. Jayesh Rane got on to the ball on the left flank and played a back pass to Ahmad Hatife. The midfielder's long pass to the onrushing Lawrence only needed a feather touch to put it in the back of the net. However the former Dempo midfielder's poor connection meant that the scoreline remained unchanged.

The home side then picked up as they looked to assert themselves. This time, the chance fell to Alwyn George in the 33rd minute who missed a glorious opportunity to put his side ahead. Debabrata Roy tried to find Tolgay Ozbey with his cross, but Mumbai FC managed to clear the danger. The ball fell to Clifford Miranda who headed it towards goal only for Sandesh Jhingan to clear again. George picked up the pieces and took a great touch to get past two defenders, but his final effort was not noteworthy.

Mumbai had another chance in the 36th minute as Yusif Yakubu went for the spectacular as he attempted an overhead-kick from inside the box, but the Dempo rearguard managed to block his effort.

Dempo managed to take the lead in the closing minutes of the first half courtesy of a goal by Roberto Mendes da Silva. Jewel Raja was brought down by Jhingan close to the box and da Silva stepped up to curl in an unstoppable free-kick with the rival custodian just staying put looking at the ball fall in the back of the net. The goal gave the home team an advantage going into the break.

The home team started the second half on a bright note as Romeo Fernandes surged through on the right flank and put in a chipped cross to Ozbey, who chested it and attempted a bicycle kick which went just wide.

Rahul Bheke’s long throw into the box in the 52nd found Ashutosh Mehta perfectly but his shot lacked power as it landed straight into the hands of Laxmikant Kattimani.

Dempo could have doubled their lead in the 72nd minute as Romeo's accurate pass found Ozbey whose left footed shot saw Jhingan put in world class tackle that ensured Mumbai were still in the game.

In an effort to bring Mumbai back on level terms, Sehnaj Singh attempted a spectacular 30 yard shot in the 75th minute, but was easily saved.

The away side finally managed to find the equalizer in the 88thminute courtesy of a goal from Alfred Jaryan. Mumbai were awarded a throw-in on right flank. Bheke's delivery found Jaryan whose fantastic glancing header levelled the score.

The two sides shared the spoils as the game ended 1-1.
