The clash between Dempo and East Bengal is always one that would make fans sit up and take notice. The Red and Gold are on course for a second place finish after their title challenge ran its course. Dempo on the other hand have been plagued by injuries and off-field issues that have done their season no favours. However this tie will prove to be a feisty encounter with one of the best sides in Goa pitting their wits against a top Kolkata club.
Dempo put an end to their string of losses by sharing the spoils with Churchill Brothers in the last round of the I-League. The Goans have not won a game in the last 8 rounds of the league which is something that you never associate with the Golden Eagles. They currently lie in 5th place and are hoping to end the season in that position. The reigning I-League champions will have to regroup, identify their flaws and come back as a stronger force next year.
East Bengal will no doubt be on cloud nine. The Red and Gold qualified for the knockout stages of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup by remaining undefeated in their group and will now turn their attention towards the second place in the league. They are currently 6 points behind Pune FC and 8 behind leaders Churchill Brothers.
Trevor Morgan’s men drew their last three games in the I-League which saw them lose ground in the title race. They will have to get back to winning ways against Dempo who are right now on shaky ground. A win here would set things up nicely for the Kolkatans who face United Sikkim and Shillong Lajong in their last two games of the league.
Dempo SC: Centre-half Cresson Antao will return from suspension and will be available for selection. Rowilson Rodrigues, Mahesh Gawli and Prathamesh Maulingkar are all injured giving Colaco a selection headache.
East Bengal: Striker Andrew Barisic is still recovering from a hip injury. The good news for Morgan is that he will have Harmanjot Khabra and Mehtab Hussain available for this tie after the duo served their suspensions.
