Arthur Papas' side registered only their second victory in the season as they edged out the defending champions...
Churchill Brothers’ poor run of form continued as their search for their first victory in the 2013-14 season is yet to bore a result.
In the Goan derby against Dempo SC, they went down 1-0 at the Duler Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. A first half strike by Jeje Lalpekhlua was the only goal in the game which turned out to be the winner.
The inclusion of Jeje Lalpekhlua and Romeo Fernandes were the two changes for Dempo in place of Billy Mehmet and Myron Fernandes.
With Ahmad Al Kaddour and Hameed Adesope released from the club, Naveen Sudhakaran was paired up with Ravanan Dharmaraj while Henri Antchouet played as the lone man in the attack for Churchill. Bikramjit Singh in place of Micky Fernandes was the other change.
Jeje Lalpekhlua's headed on target from Debabrata Roy's cross from the right side in the 13th minute, but Churchill goalkeeer Arindam Bhattacharya managed to knick it on to the post while off the counter, Antchouet squared it to Bineesh Balan whose left footer swayed past the top left corner.
However Dempo didn’t have to wait too long for the opening goal as Jeje placed it past the Churchill custodian after Beto’s through-ball cut through the opposition defense.
Bhattacharya made a top save to keep out Clifford Miranda’s shot who was played through by Jeje after some good work by Romeo Fernandes on the right wing.
Before the end of the first half, Jeje did well to set up Shinnosuke Honda whose shot was blocked by the Churchill defense. Balan had a chance to find the equaliser by was denied by an alert Subhasish Roy Chowdhury.
Three minutes into the second half, Jeje and Beto combined once again with the latter shotting wide from inside the box.
Churchill never really managed to threaten the opposition and it was thanks to the profligacy of the Dempo attackers that the score line remained 1-0.
Dempo substitute Jewel Raja's attempt on goal after the 70th minute was blocked by Bhattacharya, while at the other end Antchouet wasn't able to drive his shot from about 30 yards on target.
In the 81st minute, Debabrata Roy did well to intercept Anthony Pereira's cross in front of goal with Antchouet lurking around the area.
In the last chance that Churchill had to draw level, Lenny Rodrigues shot in the arms of Roy Chowdhury while his counterpart, Bhattacharya, did well to tip out Beto's free-kick in injury time.
