The Kolkata side made a great start to their Federation Cup campaign, but a late resurgence from Arthur Papas's men saw them take full points...
Dempo SC came back from being a goal down to edge past Rangdajied United 2-1 in the opening encounter of group D in the Federation Cup at Manjeri.
Sanju Pradhan was named on the bench by Dempo coach Arthur Papas. Bhawanipore missed the services of Jose Barreto and coach Juliano Fontana started with Dipendu Dowary as the lone striker with J.Prasad and Daniel Bedemi being slotted into the midfield.
After a scrappy start, it was the Kolkata outfit who drew first blood as Dowary invaded the opposition box from the flank. He was provided with a quality through ball by Prasad and the striker made no mistake in curling his left footed attempt past the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Laxmikant Kattimani to put his side ahead.
Bhowamipore were the dominant side throughout the opening 45 minutes and creates a number of goal scoring opportunities. Dempo’s best chance came midway through the first half when Jeje Lalpekhlua ended up side-netting.
At the other end, Nabin Hela saw his shot being fisted away by the Dempo custodian.
After the break, Papas’ half-time team talk seemed to have worked wonders for the side. His decision to bring on Alwyn George for Pronay Halder was a masterstroke. It was the youngster who scored the equalizer in the 67th minute.
Nine minutes later, Dempo made their dominance count as the Beto curled in a venomous free-kick from outside the box gicing Debjit Majumder no chance whatsoever.
Thereafter Dempo kept the ball well and never allowed the opposition to threaten their one goal lead. They next face United Sikkim while Bhawanipore shall lock horns with Mohammedan Sporting.
