Cornell Glen scored the only goal of the game as Shillong Lajong beat Churchill Brothers 1-0 in Goa.Churchill Brothers' poor form this season continued as they were beaten 0-1 at home by Shillong Lajong in a round 14 I-League encounter on Tuesday afternoon. A solitary strike from Cornell Glen in the 71st minute gave the north-east side all three points.
The hosts came into the match with as many as five changes with Bineesh Balan selected in the starting line-up after being dropped in the game against Sporting Clube de Goa while the most signifant changes saw defenders Ravanan Dharmaraj and Denzil Franco relegated to the bench.
On the other side, Thangboi Singto made only one change from his last line-up with C. Lallawmzuala included in place of Robin Gurung.
In the first attempt of the game that fell to the home team, Balwant Singh shot wide in the 10th minute as the Red Machines dominated the proceedings.
Bineesh Balan made a storming run on the right side after Lenny Rodrigues spotted him in the area in the 28th minute. The former crossed dangerously but the delivery was slightly out of reach for Balwant before the striker's shot came off the post two minutes later.
After the half-hour mark, the Churchill attackers were thrice thwarted as Balwant was first denied by rival keeper Laltauammawia Ralte before his second and rather weak attempt was cleared by Wailadmi Passah, although only as far as Abdelhamid Shabana who dug his left foot in the turf instead of striking the ball cleanly.
Ten minutes into the second period, Lenny was denied by the keeper from close range after the India international was set up by Shabana.
With twenty minutes remaining, Balwant manages to get to a lobbed pass by Satish Singh from the right, but his header was easily cut out by the Lajong custodian.
A minute later though the away side broke the deadlock. Arindam Bhattacharya made a complete mess of things as the Churchill custodian fumbled the ball and Glen was on hand to take it away and slot it into the right corner.
In the 84th minute, Balan's shot was kept out by Lalchhuanmawia Fanai's goal-line clearance. Three minutes later, a cross from the right by Boithang Haokip was met in the box by Glen but the Lajong striker's first touch let him down as the ball raced over the touchline.
The visitors held on to secure a narrow victory as they lie fourth in the league with 20 points. Meanwhile, defending champions remain rooted to the foot of the table with just seven points.
