Churchill Brothers – Rangdajied United Preview: Battle of the bottom placed sides

The two relegation battlers will kick-start the proceedings as the I-League returns from a winter break…

Churchill Brothers and Rangdajied United go head-to-head in a crucial I-League fixture at the Tilak Maidan, Goa on Tuesday.

Fresh from the Federation Cup triumph, the Goan outfit will look to carry the same form into the I-League where they have been woeful to say the least.

With just two victories to show from 13 matches, the Red Machines need to start picking up three points else they could go down at the end of the season.

However their display at the Federation Cup caught everyone by surprise as they remained unbeaten on their way to picking up the trophy. They scored 12 in five matches while in the I-League, it took them 13 matches to net the same number of goals.

The addition of Anthony Wolfe and his combination with Balwant Singh and Abdelhamid Alshabana has been seamless. Costa Rican striker Cristian Lagos will be available to add more teeth to their attack.

“Everybody is happy and they (Churchill players) expect more in the I-League. Since they have done well [in the Federation Cup], even the supporters expect more now. So naturally the responsibility is more,” said coach Mariano Dias.

On the other hand, Rangdajied United put in a decent display at the Federation Cup where they held East Bengal and Bengaluru FC and only went down to Sporting Clube de Goa which killed their hopes of making it into the knockout stages.

With just two wins in their kitty from 14 matches, the north eastern outfit cannot afford to slip further and certainly not against fellow relegation contenders.

“David Nghaite is a doubtful starter. Apart from him, everyone is fit. Churchill are a good side and played well in the Federation Cup. But we will look to get a positive result,” said coach Santosh Kashyap.

There is no Subrata Paul in goal but in comes Rehnesh TP who has worked in the past with Kashyap at ONGC. Sushant Matthew will add some bite into their midfield, while former Churchill Brothers winger Steven Dias will look provide crosses from the right.

An intriguing encounter on Tuesday with three points up for grabs.
